UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERTO SCARAMELLA, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICT.
ICE-CREEPER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERTO SGARAMELLA, a citizen of the United States, residing at New I-Iaven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ice-Creep ers; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents, in-
Figure 1 a plan view of an ice creeper constructed in accordance with my invention and shown in open position. Fig. 2 a plan view of the same, shown in closed position. Fig. 8 a. sectional view showing the device applied to a shoe and in the open position. F ig. 4 a side view of the device shown as applied to a shoe, in the closed position.
This invent-ion relates to an improvement in ice creepers, that is, a device adapted to be attached to either boots or shoes to prevent slipping on the ice.
The object of this invention is to produce a simple device which is readily applied to the heels of boot-s and shoes, which compensates for heels of varying thicknesses and which permits the device to he turned forward of the heel when not required for use; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter' described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a spring plate 2 slitted at itsrear end to form a spring linger 3 and arms 4l and 5 the ends of which are rolled to form bearings for a pintle 6 by which the spring plate is hinged to a calk plate 7 carrying calks 8 and having stop lugs 9. Pivotally connected to the forward end of the spring plate are two gripping arms 10 and 11 each having a gripping jaw 12, and the rear ends of these gripping arms are connected together by a screw 13 which is swiveled to one of the arms and in threaded engagement with the other and provided with a thumb-piece 111 so that as the screw is turned, the gripping jaws 12 will be drawn together.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 599,500.
The device is attached to a shoe forward of the heel by causing the gripping jaws 12 to grip the sole forward of the heel, as seen in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings and so that the screw will be located slightly forward of the heel.
The calk plate may be turned forward as shown in Fig. ll of the drawings so that the calks extend upward and are in a plane above the plane of the bottom of the heel, and the calk plate will be held in this position by the spring-linger 3 bearing upon the surface of the calk plate. Then required for use the calk plate is turned downward and rearward as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings so as to rest against the underside of the heel, at which time the calks project downward therefrom, and the calk plate will be held in this position by the engagement of the lugs 9 with the spring finger 3. The spring plate 2 will yield so that the calk plate may bear upon the surface of the heel and the spring plate will yield according to the thickness of the heel so that when turned into position for use the calk plate will stand parallel with the under surface of the heel.
I claim 1. An ice Creeper comprising a spring plate, a calk plate hinged thereto and carrying calks, gripping arms pivotally connected to the forward end of said spring plate, and means for drawing the rear ends of the gripping arms together.
2. An ice creeper comprising a spring plate formed at its rear end with a spring finger and pintle bearings, a calk plate hinged to said spring plate and formed with lugs to be engaged by said spring finger, a pair of gripping arms pivotally connected to the forward end of the said plate and each carrying a gripping finger, and a. screw connecting the rear ends of said gripping arms and adapted to draw them together.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERTO SGARAMELLA.
