To all whom. t may concern:
Be it known that I, STERLING H. CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the VUnited States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Angle-Cock Holder for Railway-Cars, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication.
My invention relates to an angle cock holder for railway cars, and its object is to provide a holder which will be simple in construction and effective in operation and which will notbe liable to get ont. of order by loss of parts.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate two forms of holders made in accordance with my invention, Figures l and 2 are a front and side elevation, respectively, of the holder and an angle cock carried. thereby; Figs. 3 and l are views similar to -Figs. l and 2, but showing the holder alone g. 1U represents a flange which is made oi such form as to leave a hexagonal opening 11 adapted to fit the hexagonal head 12 of' an angle cock which is carried by the train pipe 13. The flange 10 is provided with four contact points, namely, an upper pair 14 and a lower pair 15, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 7. These contact points 14 and 15 are curved so as to fit the body lf3 ot' the angle cock and thus limit its rearward movement. In order to secure the angle cock against forward movement, I provide the flange 10 with openings 17 adapted to receive a cotter pin 18, which cotter pin is adapted to bear against the front. face ol the angle cock'head l2 and thus prevent the for4 ward movement of the angle cock.
It will be evident that the insertion of the eotter pin firmly locks the angle cock in position, as the contact points 111 and 15 prevent its rearward movement and the cotter pin itself prevents its forward movement.
In oi der to secure the holder to a railway car I evident thatV the flange provide the flange l0 with an integral plate 20 having formed 'at right angles thereto a second plate 21. These two plates 2O and 2l. together form a bracket by means of which the holder is bolted to the .end sill 22 by means ot' bolts 23 and mit-s 24, :is shown in Figs. .l and 2. .V
In Figs. 5, t3 and 7 I have shown a modification in which the flange l() is provided `with the tifontaet points 1st and .15 and with the holes 17 llor the cotter pin, in the same manner as the forni above described. In this modification, however, the flange 20 ,is dispensed with and in its place the holder is provided with a fla-nge 25 arranged at. right angles to the flange 1() and preferably entirely surrounding the same. In this construction the member composed of the flanges 10 and 25 is inserted in a suitable hexagonal opening in a. plate carried by the ear. As shown in Figs. 5 and 6, this plate is the end sill 22. In order that the meinber lcomposed ot thellanges 10 and 25 must be placed in the opening of the end sill 22 in the proper position, I provide the said member with a projection 2G which is preferably arranged at one corner of the hexagon and I provide the opening in the end sill with a simila r t-.xt'ension 27 adapted to receive the projection 26, as best shown in Fig. 6. This insures the proper positioning o'lE the member in its opening. It will be 25 prevents the withdrawal of the member in the end sill. At the same time, this Vform ot my invention allws a certain amount of play between the car and the angle cock. This play will compensate for the relative variation in the length of the train pipe and car due to cambering, and thus reduces the strain upon the joint between thc train pipe and angle cock.
It will be evident that in my device there is therefore no chance for loss of parts which would disable the device. In both forms the holder itself consists of but a single casting, and the eotter pin which holds the angle -cook in position in the holder is not liable to become lost, and, even it' lost, it may be readily replaced by a nail or wire of the proper size.
I claim:
1. In an angle cock holder, a member rovided 'with a flanged opening adapte to receive the through the opening head of the angle cock and pre ber completely surrounding the head of the angle cock and a removable abutment car ried' by said member and adapted to engage With the front of the angle cock head.
3. In an angle coclr'holder-the combina tion with an integral member provided With an angular opening adapted to receive the head of the angle cock, said'member being provided With a flange, of contact points bearing on the body of the angle cock, and a removable abutment carried by said 'member and adapted to engage With the front :tace of the angle cock head.
4. In an angle cock holder the combination with a member provided With an angular opening adapted to receive the head of an angle cock and prevent its rotation, of a plate having ab opening to receive said member, a ixed abutment carried by said. member for engaging the rear of said plate, and a removable abutment carried by said member for engaging With the front face of the angle cock head.
5. In an angle cock holder the combination with a flanged opening adapted to receveA the head of an angle cock-and prevent its rotatin, and a pin passing transversely tion with a member provided with a flanged opening adapted to receive the head of an angle cock andprevent its rotation, said flange forming a plurality of contact pointsl bearing on the body of the angle cock, of a 'pin passing transversely through said flange and forming a removable abutment to engage with the iron'tface of the angle cock head.
7. In an angle-cock holder, the combination With'a member provided With an opening adapted to receive'the head of an angle cock and prevent its rotation, said member comprising a flange and an abutment, said flange forming a plurality of contact points bearing upon the body of the angle-cock, of a plate having an opening to receive said member, said abutment bearing against the rear of said plate, and a pin passing transversely through said iange and forming a removable abutment for engaging the front face of the angle-cock head.
