WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1912.
Application filed March 29, 1912. Serial No. 687,061.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B'ooosn, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a speci fication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive wrench that can be used in places inaccessible to an ordinary monkey or spanner wrench.
A further object of this invention is to provide a strong and durable wrench consisting of parts easily and quickly assembled.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the wrench, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a portion of the same, Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the wrench partly broken away and partly in section, and Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the wrench.
A wrench in accordance with this invention comprises handle sections 1 provided with flat rectangular heads 2, said heads having the confronting faces, at the outer ends thereof, recessed, as at 3. The handle sections 1 and the heads 2 are connected by rivets 4; or other fastening means. The handle sections 1 and the heads 2 have the confronting faces thereof longitudinally grooved to provide a bore 5 and said bore encircles a transverse opening 6 formed in the inner ends of the heads 2.
Pivotally mounted between the heads 2 and the recesses 3 by transverse pins 7 are levers 8 that have the ends thereof bifurcated. The levers are curved and the inner ends are pivotally connected by pins 9 to the flat head 10 of a screw 11. The screw 11 is adjusted through the medium of a nut 12 located in the opening 6, said nut having the upper and lower ends thereof rotatably held in the enlarged portions 13. of the bore 5.
The outer bifurcated ends of the levers 8 are pivotally connected by pins 14 to the inner reduced ends 15 of oppositely disposed jaws 16. The reduced ends 15 of the jaws are pivotally connected by pins 17 to side links 18 and said links are pivotally mounted in the recesses 8 by pins 19 and spacing washers 20. v
The nut 12 is knurled and protrudes from the ends of the opening 6 whereby it can be easily gripped by the fingers and rotated. By rotating the nut, the screw 11 is raised or lowered and when raised, the outer ends of the levers 8 are swung outwardly, lowering the jaws 16, the jaws being supported in a vertical position by the side links 18. A very minute adjustment of the nut 12 opens the jaws 16 to grip the facets of a nut, and it is obvious that the wrench can be inserted in a socket or other small recess and a nut rotated therein.
What I claim is A wrench comprising a sectional handle, a head carried thereby and having the outer end thereof provided with a recess, said sectional handle having a longitudinal bore formed therein intersecting a transverse opening in the inner end of said head, levers pivotally mounted in the recess of said head, a screw located in the bore of said handle and having the end thereof pivotally connected to the inner ends of said levers, a nut rotatably supported within the opening of said head for adjusting said screw, jaws having reduced ends pivotally connected to the outer ends of said levers, and side links pivotally mounted in the recess of said head and pivotally connected to the reduced ends of said jaws.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN BUGOSH.
