TRAVELING-CASE FOR UMBRELLAS, PARASOLS, AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 24, 1912. Serial No. 679,778.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARDINE Lizzie MITCHELL, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Traveling-Cases for Umbrellas, Parasols, and the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in traveling cases or covers for umbrellas, parasols, and the like articles, and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
It is carried out as follows, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in whichz- Figure 1. is a side elevation of the case or magazine Fig. 2. shows the magazine opened out.
In the drawings, pockets 1 are formed of canvas, silk, linen, or other convenient and suitable material, said pockets are closed at their lower ends, and to form a magazine, such pockets are stitched so as to join at their edges 2, which edges for the sake of appearance are preferably braided. Two or more such stitched pockets constitute part of, and preferably, half part, 3, of the magazine. Such parts 3 of the magazine are in their edges provided with stifi'eners 4 consisting preferably of light metal rods inserted when stitching, between the folds of the material constituting the pockets. The upper ends of said parts 3 are provided with flaps 5 which flaps may either be stitched on to the pockets or formed in one piece with the material. Said flaps 5 are also provided with light metal rod stiifeners 6 in their edges. The rods 6 are hinged to rods 4 at 7 in such a manner so as to allow the flaps to be turned back from the pockets. The outside of the case may be edged with leather and ornamented if desired.
In operation the umbrellas, parasols, or the like, are inserted into the pockets 1, the
Copies of this patent may be obtained for two or more parts 3 of the magazine are now folded together and secured by means of straps 8 and buckles 9. To facilitate carrying the magazine may be provided with a handle 10. Should any article in the case be required, the magazine need not be unstrapped, as the flap 5 need only be turned back as shown in Fig. 1, to allow any article to be taken out. Said flap may be provided with springs in the hinges 7 in order to be kept normally closed.
I claim 1. In a traveling case, the combination, with a body portion formed of two foldablc trough-shaped sections hinged together at one side and closed at one end, each section bein formed of flexible material and having Iongitudinal stifl'ening rods at its. side edges; of pockets formed of flexible mate rial secured longitudinally in the troughs of the said sections and being open at the open ends of the sections, and cover flaps formed of flexible material and provided with loop-shaped stiffening-rods which are hinged to the end portions of the longitudinal stiffening rods and which are movable in a plane crosswise of the hinges of the sec tions, the stiffening-rods of the cover flaps being arranged in the same plane with the Patented July 2, 1912. r
stiffening-rods of the said sections when the cover flaps are closed over the open ends of the said pockets.
2. In a traveling case, the combination, with a body portion formed of two foldable sections hinged together on one side and closed at one end, each section being formed of flexible material and longitudinal stiffeners at its side edges; of two flaps of flexible material provided with loop shaped stiffeners, said loop-shaped stiffeners being hinged to the end portions of the aforesaid stifl'cners and being movable in a plane crosswise of the hinges of the said sections.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
