Description

UNITED ,STATES .PATENT DFFICE.
ALMA EEDFoED, oF coLDwATEE, MICHIGAN.v
IMPROVED HARNESS-BUCKLE.
`Specification, forming part of Letters Patent N0. 103.128, dated May 17, 1670; antedated i. l May 5,1870.
To a/Zlwhom it may concern.: Be it known that I, ALMA BEDFORD, of
Goldwater, in the county of Branch and State of Michigan7 have invented certain new and usefulImprovementsinLoopHarness-Buckles;
and `I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
reference `beingl had to the accompanying drawings, making part of thisy specication,
` e and to the `letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they o ccur.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
i My invention relates to loop harness-buckles; and it consists in constructing the bar of the buckle with a fiat rear extension, for the purpose of preventing the buckle from turning on the strap to which it may be attached, and also in providing the under side of the loop with lips or projections, to extend on the under side of strap-connection.
` In the drawings, Figure lis a top plan View. Fig.` 2 is a cross-section on theline ma of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3-isa longitudinal section on thev line y y of Fig. l.
As is well known, the loop harness-buckle is ordinarily constructed with a single round cross-bar, to whichthe tongue is loosely attached, and about which the strap is passed for being fastened. Buckles of this kind, when so connected to .the strap, frequently turn on their'point of connection, when the loop end, 'being tilted up. allowsthe reins or other loose straps about the harness to catch under it.
. rIo furnish aloop-buckle that, when at` y tached will not turn on its'point of vconnection is the object of my invention. This Ido by making the' `crossbar of the buckle of a peculiar form, and by attaching lipsor projections to the under side of theloop. `I construct my buckle A in the usual manner, and out of any'suitable materials.
The front end of its frame may be circular, yas
shown in Fig. l, or partly so, or square, as desired. Its rear end I make square, and surmount it with the loop C, having its top beveled, as shown in all the figures.
tachingthe tongue D, and also with holes b, for the thread Vto pass through which binds together the upper and lower side of the strap passing about the cross-bar B, for connecting the buckle, as the iiat extension of the bar B in this waycomes inthe fold of 4the strap about the bar, and as the strap is to be fastened to it, it is obvious that, when so fastened, the buckle cannot turn, but will be'held in a directline with the strap to which it is fastened.
To the under side of the loop C, Iform projections c, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, so arranged as to catch under the strap when con- -nected to the cross-bar of the buckle, and
thus to hold the buckle in directline with the strap andprevent it from turning. y
The advantages of a loop harness -buckle thus constructed 'are obvious. The cross-bar,
with its fiat rear extension, as well as the lips under the loop, serves to hold the buckle always in line with the strap to which it may be connected, and in the construction of the buckle the tongue is always in the center, and cannot get 4outgof place in the turning process, as is so often the case when there is nothing to keep it in its proper position.
Having thus described my invention, what I A Its `cross' barlB, I make wtha ilat extension, a, pro. lvided in its center with an opening for aty
