SWEEP-HOLDER ATTACHMENT.

To all whom it may concern:

' Be it known that 1, JAMES H. Boo'rn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Point Peter. in the county of Oglethorpe and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sweep- I-Iolder Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to plow attachments and more particularly to means for adjustably holding the'plow sweep in position.

An object of the invention is to provide a plow sweep holder which may be adjustably secured upon the standard and which will effectively hold the sweep against rocking.

Another object is to provide an adjustable sweep holder adapted to be adjustably secured to the standard and adjusted in respect to the latter and in respect to the blade or point carried adjustably upon the front side of the standard.

A further object is to provide a sweep holder adapted to be adjustably connected to the back side of a standard to be adjusted vertically or longitudinally of said standard, said holder adapted to have secured thereto the plow sweep between said holder and said standard, and adjustable means carried by said holder for engagement against the upper edge of said sweep, the sweep holding means carried by said holder being adapted for engagement with the standard to prevent the sweep from rocking from side to side, and means for securing said holder to the rear side of said standard and at the same time secure a blade or point upon the front side of said standard.

Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the specification and claim.

In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a front view of a standard with my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is a slightly enlarged sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the adjustable sweep engaging plate carried by the sweep holder to prevent rocking of said sweep. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the sweep Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring to the drawings in which similar reference nlunerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 represents the lower Ushaped end of an ordinary standard, 2 an ordinary sweep and 3 the usual blade or point. These, however, are the ordinary parts of plows now in general use and form no part of the invention, but are simply shown to more readily illustrate the use and position of the sweep holder and the manner in which the latter-secures the sweep in proper position against lateral or rocking movement.

The sweep holder consists of two parts, namely: The holder plate 4 and the sweep engaging plate 9 carried by said holder plate. The holder plate 4 is slightly curved or concavecl from end to end on its front face and similarly convexed upon its rear face (as clearly shown in Fig. 2). It is provided with the central longitudinal slot 5, through which extends the bolt (3, the purpose of which will later appear. Near the lower rounded end of the holder plate 4t and upon its front side is the square lug 7 adapted to receive the ordinary plow sweep 2 (previously mentioned). The holder plate 4: is also provided, upon opposite sides of the slot 5 near the upper end of said plate, with the threaded integral lugs 8, the purpose of which will later appear. As will be noticed the holder plate 4 is curved so as to conform to the shape or angle of the standard 1.

The ordinary plow sweep 2is provided with a square opening near the center thereof, by means of which the sweep may be positioned upon the lower end of the holder plate 4:, the lug 7 thereof extending through said square opening. The point of the lug is adapted for engagement between the parallel vertical portions of the standard 1. The sweep engaging and steadying plate 9 is provided with the parallel elongated slots 10 near its opposite edges, which are adapted for engagement over the threaded lugs 8 of the holder plate 4. The threaded lugs 8 are adapted to receive the bolts 11 thereupon after the engaging plate 9 is in position to hold the latter in adjusted position upon the sweep holder plate 4. The engaging plate 9 is also provided with the longitudinal slot 12 extending from the lower curved edge 13 of said plate to within a short distance of its upper edge. The slot 12 when the engaging plate 9 is in position, is directly over the slot 5 of the holder plate 4.

The blade or point 3 is provided with the usual aperture near its upper end through which extends the bolt 6 passing through the standard 1 between the vertical parallel portions thereof, through the slot 12 of the engaging plate 9 and the slot 5 of the holder plate 4. The head of the bolt 6 engages against the front face of the blade 3, while an ordinary nut (preferably a locknut) 14 is secured upon the opposite end and engages against the rear side of the holder plate 4. This serves to hold the blade securely engaged against the standard 1 and also to draw the holder plate 4: toward the rear side of said blade, pressing the sweep 2 and its engaging plate 9 tightly against said rear side of the standard bet-ween the latter and the holder plate 4. As will be understood, the blade 3, and the sweep 2, as well as the sweep holder, may be adjusted longitudinally of the standard for various plowing operations.

It will be evident that the end of the lug 7 will at all times, when the parts are adjusted, be engaged bet-ween the parallel portions of the standard 1 and, as the bolt 6 also passes through the standard between these parallel portions and a short distance above said lug, the holder plate 4 is securely held against rocking motion independently of the standard. The engaging plate 9 is adjusted to bring its curved lower edge 13 into snug engagement against the upper curved edge of the sweep 2 and is secured in this position by means of the bolts 11, previously described. This engagement of the engaging plate 9 against the sweep 2 prevents the latter from rocking upon the lug 9 and thus eliminates all possibility of either side of the sweep from riding over a portion of .the ground adjacent the furrow or channel made by the blade 3., without cutting said ground.

Owing to the adjustability of the engaging plate 9 any sized sweep may be used and, should the parts become loosened, the engaging plate 9 may be shoved downwardly to again snugly engage the upper edge of said sweep, the lower edge of the engaging plate 9 conforming to the curved upper edge of the sweep.

As the invention itself consists of only two parts of such simple formation, it is evident that the attachment may be manufactured at an extremely low figure and the price of the same will be within the reach of all persons in need of the same.

What I claim is:

The combination with a plow standard, a sweep, and a heel bolt; of a sweep holder plate carrying means engaging and supporting the sweep, and an adjustable plate carried upon said holder plate and engaging the top of the sweep to prevent the latter from rocking, said plates being provided with registering longitudinal passages receiving therethrough said heel bolt for retaining said parts in rigid engagement with said standard.
