COLTER-BRACE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr.. 25, 1916..
Application led March 2, 1915. Serial No. 11,540.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HILMAR M. WAHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haug, in the county of Roseau, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Colter-Braces; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in plows, and particularly to colter attachments therefor.
The principal object of the invention is to provide novel and eiiicient means for bracing the standard of the colter so as to prevent breakage thereof when the plow is used in soil which has stones7 stumps, or brush.
Another object is to provide a brace of this character which is capable of adjustment with the adjustment of the colter and which will prevent the colter swinging too far Yon the standard.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention applied to a plow, Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view, Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2and Fig. l is a perspective view of the member attached to the colter standard.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents the beam of the plow and 11 the plow. On the forward end of the beam is the usual clevis 12 and clamped on the beam is the vertical standard 13 on the lower end of which is mounted a rearwardly extending frame 14 which carries a colter wheel 15. Disposed through the clevis from the rear side is an eye bolt 16, the same being secured to the clevis by means of the nut 17. A second eye bolt 18 has its eye interlocked with the eye of the bolt 16 and has its stem threaded, the same being received in one end of a turn buckle 19.
Engaged in the other end of the turn buckle is the threaded stem of an eye bolt 20, the eye of which is engaged in an opening' 21 in a plate 22. This plate 22 has an opening 23 which receives the lower end portion of the standard 13 below the edge of the frame 14, the lower end of the standard having a nut 24 thereon. At one side of the opening 23, the plate has formed therethrough a plurality of circularly alined openings 25 into any one of which is threadedly engaged a set screw 26. A clip 27 secures the standard adjustably on the beam.
By means of the turn buckle 19 the brace can be lengthened or shortened so as to accommodate itself to the colter standard when the said standard is adjusted vertically.
This device forms an effective brace which prevents the backward bending tendency of the standard by engagement of the colter with the ground, when the plow is in motion. Thus the danger of the standard breaking is reduced to a minimum.
The device is of such construction that it can be quickly and easily applied to the ordinary sulky plow with the mere boring of a hole in the clevis for the eye bolt 16.
By means of the set screw 26 the swinging movement of the fork 14 on the lower end of the standard can be limited in one direction according to the hole 25 in which the set ,screw is placed.
What is claimed is:
The combination with the clevis and colter standard of a plow, of an adjustable brace connected to the standard and to the clevis, a plate forming a part of the brace and mounted on the lower end of the standard and a set screw engageable in any one of a series of openings in said plate for limiting the swinging movement of the colter.
In testimony whereof, I aiX my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
