PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB RUGH, OF- MOUNT EATON, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM M. JOHNSTON, OF WILMOT, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. IS7,320, dated February 13,1877; application filed December 30, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB RUOH, of Mount Eaton, in, the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Im provement in Plows, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a side view of my improved plow, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a rearview of the same, part being broken away to show the construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish plows which shall be so constructed that they may be readily adjusted to work deeper or shallower in' the ground, and to take and leave land, as may be desired.
The invention consists in the concaved washer, the con vexed slotted washer, and the concaved washer, in combination with the rounded upper end of the standard, the bolt, and the mortised plow-beam; and in the combination of the bolt, the block, the slotted bar, and the clamping-bolt with the plowbeam and the handles, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the mold-board, B the landside, 0 the colter, and D the standard, of the plow. The upper end of the standard D is rounded off, and has a bolt, E, attached to it. F is a washer, the lower side of which is concaved to fit upon the rounded upper end of the standard D. Gr is the plow-beam, which rests upon the upper side of the washerF, and has a V-shaped mortise formed through it to receive the bolt E. Upon the upper side of the beam G is placed a washer, H, which is convex upon the upper side, is of such a size as to cover the upper end of the mortise in said beam, and has a longitudinal slot formed in it for the passage of the bolt E. Upon the convex side of the Washer H is placed a smaller washer, I, which is made concave upon the lower side to fit upon the Washer H, and has a hole formed through it for the passage of the bolt E.
By this construction, by loosening the nut upon the upper end of the bolt E the forward end of the plow-beam Gr may be raised and lowered to cause the plow to run deeper or shallower in the ground, as may be required.
J is a bolt, the head of which is made large,
is slotted to receive the rear end of the beam G, and is secured to said beam by a bolt or pin. The sides of the end of the beam G are recessed to receive the end or lugs of the bolt J, so that the downward pressure may come upon the end of the bolt J, and'not upon its pin. The bolt J passes down through a hole in the block K, through a slot in the bar L, upon which the said block K rests, and has two nuts screwed upon it, one above the block K and the other below the bar L, so that by loosenirig the nut upon the bolt E and adjusting the nuts upon the bolt J the plowbeam Gr may be adjusted vertically.
The hole through the block K is made larger than the bolt J, and the said block is concaved upon its upper side around the said hole, and the lower side of the upper nut is convexed to fit into the said concavity, to center the bolt J and prevent its threads from being worn by contact with-the said block K.
The block K has a lug formed upon its lower side, which fits into the slot in the bar L, to keep the said block in place upon the said bar. The block K has a projection or lug upon one side, which has a hole formed through it to receive a bolt, M, to clamp it in place upon the bar L, so that by loosening the nut of the bolt M the plow-beams G may be adjusted laterally to take or leave land, as
may be required.
The ends of the slotted bar L are attached to the handles N, or to supports attached to said handles. The lower ends of the handles N are secured to the mold-board A and landside B, and are connected by rounds O, in the usual way.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The concaved washer F, the convexed slotted washer H, and the concaved washer I,
in combination with the rounded upper end of the standard D, the bolt E, and the mortised beam Gr, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination Of the bolt J, pivoted to the rear end of the plow-beam, the block K, the slotted cross-bar L, pivoted to the handles, and the bolt M with the plow-beam G and the handles N, substantially as herein shown and described.
J AGOB RUOH. Witnesses:
JOHN RAFF, WM. M. JOHNSTON.
