Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26, 1916.
Application filed September 27, 1916. Serial No. 122,413.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MOSWEENEY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Crete, in the county of Wayne, State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Plow; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to an improved plow, and an object of the invention is to improve and render more eflicient and practical the form of plow illustrated, set forth, and claimed in the patent issued May 16, 1916 Patent Number 1,183,138, to James McSweeney.
A further object of the invention is to simplify the means for holding a cutter member in the plow beam.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a plow beam consisting of opposite sides having a filler plate between the sides substantially midway the ends of the sides, and an arch standard between the rear portions of the sides, between the forward part of which arch standard and a filler block, the shank of a cutter member is securely clamped by means of a wedge, there being means cooperating with a pivoted plate, to draw the wedge upwardly between the filler block and the filler plate.l
In practical fields, the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed. The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, and claimed.
In'the drawings z-Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the improved plow, constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of a plow. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Figpl.
Referring more especially tothe drawings, 1 designates a metallic plow beam consisting of opposite or opposing elongated plates 2 and 3, the forward ends of which are welded together or otherwise secured as shown at 4, and passing through the secured ends of said plates is a bolt 5, on which a suitable 'clevis 6 is pivoted, whereby a suitable evener or equalizer, not shown, may be attached. Arranged between said plates 2 and 3 substantially midway their ends is a ller plate 7, secured in place by the bolts 8 and 9. Secured between the rear portions by means of the bolts 10, 11 and 121, is an v arch brace 13, the forward portion of which is provided with a vertical, fiat edge 14, constituting an abutment. Also secured adjacent the outer faces of the elongated plates 2 and 3 near their rear ends, by means of the bolt 11, are the opposing sides 16 of the standard 17, which may be adjusted pivotally upon said bolt 11.
The lower portion of the arched brace 13 is provided with a plurality of apertures 18, through any one of which a bolt 19 (which extends transversely of the ystandard 17) may extend, whereby the standard may be held in adjusted positions.
A plow blade or shovel 20 is provided, and which is secured to the lower part of the standard by means of the bolt 21, which extends through the blade or shovel downwardly and rearwardly between the two sides (which are integrally connected at their lower ends, as shown at 22) of the standard, and through a plate 23, and is provided with a nut 24, for securing the parts together. The rear edges of the opposing sides of the standard are provided with notches 25, which may be engaged by the teeth 26 upon the lower edge of the plate 23. It is to be noted that the plow blade or shovel may be adjusted substantially in a vertical direction, by loosening the nut 24, and adjusting the plate 23. The plate 23 is provided upon its upper and lower edges with lugs 27, which extend between the sides of the` standard, to prevent the plate from turning.v The teeth of the plate 23 engaging said notches also prevent the plate 23 from turning.
Passing through the opposing plates 2 and 3 substantially intermediate the rear edge of the filler plate 7 and the vertical flat edge 14 of the arched brace is a bolt 28, which also passes through an elongated slot 29 of the filler block 30, the rear edge of which is providedwith teeth 31 while its forward edge 32 is inclined upwardly and forwardly. Arranged between the teeth 31 and the vertical fiat edge 14 ofthe arched brace is the shank 33 -of the cutter 34, which in side elevation is tapering and extends downwardly andforwardly and is provided with a forward cutting edge 35, while the shank 33 extends vertically. In side elevation of the plow, the cutter 34 is at right angles to the plow blade or shovel, and 1s shank 33 sion and having disposed a trifle in advance of the plow blade or shovel. The cutter is so arrange with relation to the plow blade or shovel, that the shank 33 of said blade cannot be removed, until the plow blade or shovel is partly loosened and thrown to one side.
Arranged between the forward inclined edge 32 of the filler block and the rear edge ofthe filler plate 7 is a wedge 38, the upper end of which is provided'with a reduced threadedV extension 39. Y y The upper part of the arched brace has an extension 40, to which is pivoted by means of a bolt 41, the opposite sides 42 of the plate 43. The forward end of the plate 43 has an aperture or opening 44. rI`his plate 43 is so shaped and pivoted on the upperpextensio'n of the arch brace, that said'plateA may be thrown down in engagement with the upper edges vof Ythe elongated opposing side plates 2V and 3 of the plow beam, whereby the threaded extension 39 may extend. through the opening or aperture 44,-and so that the upper ends of the filler block 30 andthe of the cutter will extend'between the sides of the plate 43. The filler block 30 has a shoulder 46 which is immediately under the plate 43. A nut 47 is'threaded to the extension 39, to hold the plate 43 in position, and constituting means to be adjusted, whereby the wedge 38 may be drawn upwardly, so asto coperate between the filler plate and the ller block, to force the filler block rearwardly causing its teeth to bind against the forward edge of the shank 33, and clamp theshank between the edge 14 of the arched brace and said filler block.
Connected to the plow beam by the bolt 8 are the lower forward ends of the bars 49, which may terminate in suitable handles, not shown, but similar to the handles in the aforesaid patent. The bars 49 are connected by the transverserod 50, and furthermore, the handle bars 49v are braced relative to the plow beam by the straps 51, which are secured at their lower ends to4 the outer faces of the standard by the means of the bolt 11. The upper ends-of said straps are secured at 52 to the handle bars.
Theinvention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful, is
