To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. Mo DONALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Porterdale, in the county of Newton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F enders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in plow fenders and more particularly to that class which are used to protect certain plants while others are cut away, or to protect the plant while the plow is running alongside thereof by causing the ground to break and not lift near the plant and also to prevent sticks and clods from being thrown on top of the plants by,
the operation of the plow, the object of the invention being to provide such class of fenj ders as to render them more easily and sat isfacto-rily adjustable.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive of manu' arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow beam showing my improved fender applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the clamping member, parts being broken away and in section. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, parts being broken away and in section. Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing a modified form of the clamping member, parts being broken away and in section. Fig. 5 is another modified form of a clamping member, and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the fender showing a slightly modified form of the fender arm.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates aplow beam to which is secured the U-shaped clamping member 2. This clamping member is arranged on the beam so that its intermediate portion is disposed on top of the beam and its side portions arranged at the sides of the beam. A thumb screw 3 is threaded in one side of the clamping member and having a clamping plate 1 movably secured to its inner end and adapted to engage with the plow beam by means of the spur 5 formed on the inner face thereof. In the drawings I have shown the screw 3 in the form of a thumb screw but it will be understood that any suitable form of screw may be used.
One side of the member 2 is provided with an enlarged concavo-convex portion 6 having an elongated slot 7 formed therein to receive the bolt- 8. A securing plate 9 is provided which is substantially rectangular in form and provided at each end with the elongated openings 10. The forward end of the rearwardly projecting arm 11 is secured to the plate 9 by having its front end pass through the openings 10 and disposed beneath the intermediate portion of the plate, the bolt 8 is then passed through an opening in the arm 11 and through the opening in the intermediate portion of the plate and the winged nut 12 is threaded on the bolt 8 to hold the arm securely in place.
A fender plate 13 is secured to the rearward end of the arm 11 and formed of any suitable material. In'the drawings I have shown this fender blade of a substantially rectangular shape but it will be understood that these plates may be circular or any other form desired.
In Fig. 1 I have shown a clamping member 2 secured to the beam 1 so that one of the side portions of the clamping member is secured to the top of the beam and the other side disposed beneath the beam, while the intermediate portion of the member is arranged at the side of the beam. It will be fully understood that this clamping member may be secured to the top or either side of the plow beam.
In Fig. 6 I have shown the arm 11 formed in two sections adjustably secured together by means of the thumb screw 18 disposed in the slots 19 formed in the ends of the sections of the arm. It will be understood that this adjustable arm may be used in place of the rigid arm shown in Fig. 1 so that the fender plate 13 may be adjusted laterally with respect to the plow. When this adjustable arm is used I provide the threaded lug 20 formed upon the outer side of the concavo-convex portion 6 upon the rear end of which the arm 11 is mounted, said arm being held securely in place by means of the nut 21.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a slightly modified form of the clamping member wherein the bolt 22 is slidably mounted in one side of the clamping member having a head 23. The clamping plate 24 is movably secured to the inner end of the bolt and provided with a spur 25 adapted to engage with the plow beam and hold the clamping member securely in place. A coil spring 26 is mounted upon the bolt 22 and arranged between the side of the clamping member and the plate 24 to securely hold said plate into engagement with the plow beam.
Movably mounted in the slot 7 of the concavo-convex portion 6 is a threaded bolt 27 adapted to be disposed through an opening in the front end of the arm 11, and a coil spring 28 is mounted on the bolt and arranged between the nut 29 and the inner face of the portion 6 to hold the arm 11 securely in place.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted tofor successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope thereof.
Claims:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of an inverted U-shaped clamping member secured to the beam, a thumb screw arranged in one side of said member, a clam ing plate secured to the inner end of saic screw, spurs on said plate to engage with the plow beam, a rearwardlyprojecting arm secured to the other side of said member, and a fender plate secured to the rear end of said arm.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a U-shaped member secured to the plow beam, said member having an elongated slot formed in one side thereof, a bolt in said slot, a securing plate mounted on said bolt, having elongated openings in each end thereof, a rearwardly-projecting arm, having its forward end passed through said openings and disposed beneath the intermediate portion of the plate, and a fender plate secured to the rear end of said arm.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination of a U-shaped clamping member, a thumb screw arranged in one side of said member, a clamping plate movably secured to the inner end of said screw, a spur on said plate adapted to engage with the plow beam, the other side of said clamping member being concavoconvex in form, a threaded lug formed integral on the outer side thereof, a rearwardly projecting arm mounted on said lug, and a nut threaded on the lug to hold said arm securely in place.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a U-shaped clamping member, a bolt movably disposed in one side thereof, a clamping plate movably secured to the inner end of said bolt, a coil spring mounted on the bolt and arranged between the clamping plate and the side of the clamp ing member to hold said plate into engagement with the plow beam, the other side of said clamping member being concavo-convex in form and having an elongated slot movably mounted in said slot, a rearwardly projecting arm mounted on said bolt and arranged between the head of the bolt and the side of the clamping member, a nut threaded on the inner end of said bolt, and a .coil spring mounted on said bolt and arranged between the nut and the side of the clamping member to hold said arm securely in place.
