. My invention relates to improvements in skirts and has for its object to provide a construction of skirt which may be extended and contracted atthe waist line and which will proportionately become extended and contractedin width throughout its entire length.

l am aware that heretofore skirts have been devised providing for the expansion of the skirt at or about the waist line but the objectiontosuch constructions has always been that` in the absence of a proportionate adjustability of the skirt at its lower por* tions, the same would become distorted and lose. the symmetry and proportion desirable in such garments.

Further advantages of my improved con struction will be apparent without further enumeration.

In the accompanying drawings Figure l isa perspective view of my construction, Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic crosssection of Eig. 1 taken on the line 2-2; Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic cross-section of Fig.' l taken on line 3-3 thereof. Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic cross section taken on line 4-4 of'Fig. l showing the skirt in its most contracted form. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail cross section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. l.

Like reference letters designate like portions in the accompanying drawings, wherein a represents the body of the skirt; b rep#I resents the placket edges at the front thereof; a represents the waist band; Z represents ailap forming the upper part of a plalted or panel portion e which extends throughout the length of the skirt and the lower portion of which is formed by folding the material of which the skirt is made as indicated at e" and which is secured in position by rows of stitches f. flap and the skirt respectively. In my construction there are two or more such buttons or fastening devices which register with button-holes or other cooperating means on the flap. The fastening devices are placed in i rows or series on the upper adjustable portion of the skirt, which includes the waist and hip zones, and each series of said devices, extends longitudinally of the placket opening and is of a length substantially equal to the length of said opening.

lt will be observed that by the construe- 'tion as shown and here described the wearer having, for instance, secured the flap to the buttons g on either side of the placket and desiring to contractthe diameter of the waist-line, will simply disengage the Hap from the buttons and secure the same to the buttons g in the next adjacent row, and by so doing will increase the depth of the fold or plait e throughout the length of the skirt. Similarly the flap may be secured to the extreme rows of buttons g on either side of the skirt body whereby the waist line will be still further contracted and the fold or plait e will correspondingly be enlarged.

In securing the flap d to the adjacent rows of buttons the placket edges b are brought together and may even eventually overlap and are again separated as the rows of buttons nearer to said. edges ere engaged with saicl flu-ps.
