- Our invention relates to improvements in extension tables; and the objects of our improvement are first, to so construct the supporting frame of a table whose top is divisible along a middle line that the halves of the top can be separated or be brought together by pulling or pushing one end of said table only; second, to provide means for looking said halves of the table top at any desired position; and, third,tomechanically draw the said table halves, or the said parts and one or more table top leaves that may be inserted between said parts to increase the length of the table, tightly together, by manipulation from a point near the outer edge of said table top and within easy access of the operator.

EXTENSION-TABLE.
1,030,853. Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 7, 1911. Serial No. 637,341.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PERRY C. MCMAHAN and ERNEST L. KING, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Warren, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in extension tables; and the objects of our improvement are first, to so construct the supporting frame of a table whose top is divisible along a middle line that the halves of the top can be separated or be brought together by pulling or pushing one end of said table only; second, to provide means for looking said halves of the table top at any desired position; and, third,tomechanically draw the said table halves, or the said parts and one or more table top leaves that may be inserted between said parts to increase the length of the table, tightly together, by manipulation from a point near the outer edge of said table top and within easy access of the operator. l/Ve attain those objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan of the frame of a pedestal supported table, with part of the top broken away and with parts shown in section; looking down; Fig. 2 is a plan of the same looking up; Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of our locking device; Fig. 4 shows, in elevation and plan, parts ofFig. 3 enlarged; Fig. 5 is a section of a detail shown in Fig. 4.

Our invention is adapted equally well for any kind of extension table, whether with round, square or other shaped tops as well as with corner legs or pedestal support, but for convenience of description we have illus trated a common form of a table with a circular top divided into semi-portions and with a central supporting pedestal w1th a square head. The shape of said head is immaterial.
1, 1 are the halves of the tables top and are attached to slides 9, 9 respectively.
2 is the pedestal and 3 its top.
4, 4 are cross bars attached at right, or other convenient angles to each other and on the top 3 of the pedestal 2 in any manner, such as by screws 5, as shown. On sald cross bars 4 and attached thereto permanently as, for instance, by bolts 6, we seat, preferably, two center sections 7, 7 parallel to each other and with dovetailed retainers 8 on both sides thereof, which retain and guide movable slides 9, 9. Along the tops of slides 9, 9, we rabbet a longitudinal trough l0 slightly longer than half the length of each slide and extending from the outer ends of said slides from opposite ends, respectively, a few inches beyond the middle of the center sections 7.
11 is a spur wheel attached to a pivot 12 extending through center section 7, and 11 is a similar spur attached to the other end of pivot 12, although it may or may not, of ne cessity, be of the same size. Extending across the center section 7 and attached thereto we place parallel bars 14 with ends 14 turned down over the outer edges of bars 15, 15 and spaced apart sufficiently to permit of free rotation of the spur 11, and of length, preferably, less than the total width of central section 7 and slides 9, 9, and sunken so that their tops may not be above the level of the top of section 7. In the troughs 10 we place bars 15, 15 and attach them to slides 9, 9, as by screws 16", said bars 15, 15 have ratchet teeth on their inner edges corresponding to gear teeth on the spurs 11, with which they mesh.
16 is a supporting elbowed cleat attached to the under side of sections 7 as near as may be to the spurs 11 without touching them, and is so bent as to form a plate 17 to support a sliding lock retaining face 19 to lap over the vertical inner edge of bar 18 to prevent its movement longitudinally of the section 7 and yet permit the protrusion of gear teeth 20 located on part of one side of said bar 18 but dispensed with on that part of the bar 18 which will be adjacent to spur 11, when bar 18 is pulled out to its limit. The bar 18 is also slidably supported by an arcuate arm 18 that is mounted 011 the center section 7 that has the cleat 16. When said bar 18 is pushed inward it meshes with the spur 11 and can be locked at any desired position by the turning of a thumb screw, or other check, 20, threaded through it and impinging on the under side of thetable top, or on any other suitable part that may be rigidly attached to the central section 7 or the pedestal top 3. In operation, the halves of the tablebeing closed, to insert an extra leaf, the screw 20 is released and the bar 18 is drawn out of mesh with spur 11. The operator then pulls out one half, 1, of the table top and it pulls the slide 9 toward him; the gear teeth on slide 9 rotate spurs 11 and they actuate the other table half, 1, away from the operator until he has separated the table top halves sufficiently to admit the extra table leaf. The table leaf having been inserted the table top halves 1, 1 are pushed together till the dowels therein enter the dowel holes in said leaf. T o insure a tight fit the bar 18 is then pushed in till its teeth engage the spurs 11 and by revolving them revolve the spurs 11 until the latter, by operation on the gear teeth of bars 15, draw all the parts together firmly. Thereupon the operator locks the bar 18, and consequently the whole table, by manipulation of the check 20', or in case it is a spring catch, by releasing it.
We claim 1. The combination with an extensible table comprising table top sections, and a rack and pinion gearing therebetween; of means for locking said table top sections against relative movement comprising a pinpinion of said gearing; a slidable bar provided with a rack; means for guiding said bar to bring said rack and pinion into or out of engagement; and means for securing said bar when said whereby to lock Copies of this patent may be obtained for table sections,

3. The combination with an extensible table comprising a suitable support; table top sections movably mounted on said support; and a rack and pinion gearing'between said sections; of means for locking said table top sections against relative movement comprising a pinion connected with the pinion of said gearing; a cleat and an arcuate arm mounted on said support; a bar slidably mounted on said cleat and arcuate arm, said bar provided with a toothed and a straight edge adapted to engage and disengage respectively with the last named pinion; and a thumb screw carried by said movable bar and adapted to engage with one of the table top sections whereby to hold said bar in locking position, substantially as described.
