UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT JAMES CHRISTIE, OF SANGER, CALIFORNIA.
IRONING-BOARD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT J. CHRISTIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sanger, in the county of Fresno, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in ironing boards the object of the invention being to produce in combination a table and ironing board whereby the table can be used for its ordinary purposes and when desired, the ironing board can be extended therefrom and used as may be desired for the purpose of ironing or the like.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the table showing my improved ironing board attachment with the ironing board shown in projected position. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the table showing the ironing board in closed position under the table. Fig. 4 is a perspective View showing a slide mechanism for maintaining the ironing board. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken relatively on a line XX of Fig. 3.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference 1 designates the table proper having a top board 2 and end rails 3. Framed into or otherwise secured Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 31, 1909.
Patented Sept. 12, 1911. Serial No. 510,662.
to the under side of the top board 1, are guide strips 4 having two sets of guides 5 and 6.
7 is a projecting supporting beam having cross members 8 slidable in the guides 6 and having flange members 9 secured thereto and having the flange embracing the member 6 thereby forming a groove 10 to receive the member 6. This supporting member '7 is adapted to slide out to project about twothirds of its length beyond the table 1 to act as a support for an ironing board, 11, which slides in the guides 5. One of the rails 3 is slotted as at 12 to permit the guide 7 and board 11 to project as described.
When the board 11 is in its projecting position, I then lock it in such position by the following means, viz: secured to the end rail 3 through which the above described parts project are eccentric cams 13 adapted to bear against the board 11 such cams having projecting arms 14 provided with an operating handle 15 projecting to the front edge of the table whereby the same can be operated to cause the cams 13 to be brought into close engagement with the board 11 which impinges said board 11 closely against the top of the table 2 thus holding it in rigid position while in use and when not in use these cams 13 are released and the guide 7 and board 11 are pushed under the table board 2 out of sight and out of the way.
I have shown the invention in this case as used in connection with ordinary tables but in practice of course, it can be used with kitchen cabinet tables or in fact almost any kind of table desired.
From the foregoing description it will readily be seen that I have produced such an ironing board as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
An ironing board comprising the combination With a table of two guide strips secured tofche under side of said table and spaced apart such guide strips having tWo independent guides, an ironing board slidable in one guide and a supporting bar for said ironing board slidable in the other ROBERT JAMES CHRISTIE.
