FENCE-WIRE SUPPORT.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, I-IUeo A. SCHULTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dorchester, in the county of Clark and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence- VVire Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wire supporting means for fence construction and the like and has for an object to provide means for securing a wire to fence posts with improved means to compensate for contraction and expansion.
A further objectof the invention is to provide improved means for attaching wire to fence posts which permits of a longitudinal movement of the wire relative to such posts.
IVith these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view of a fragment of a fence embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the wire securing device in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a view of the wire securing device in edge elevation.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
It is well known that in the construction of wire fences the wire is subject to longitudinal movement owing to various causes principally that of expansion and contraction under atmospheric variations.
The present invention embodies a plate 10 having a slot 11 formed therein through which is inserted a nail, rivet or other fas' tening member 12 by which such plate 10 is fastened to a post 13 to permit longitudinal movement of the plate relative to the post.
The wire 14 is secured to the plate 10 by passing it through the short slots 15 which are formed in the outwardly curved portions 16 of the plate and inserting cotter pins 17 between the wire and the curvature of the plate, as indicated at Fig. 1. This Specification of Letters Patent.

manner of securing the wire to the plate permits the plate 10 to move with the wire, such movement being allowed by the slot 11 and the nail or rivet 12.
The ends of the wires may be secured by any yielding compensating means as the winding ratchets 17 carried by shanks 18 which in turn are provided with springs 19 bearing against the post and exerting longitudinal stress upon the wires 14. As the wires 14 contract the plates 10 move alon the posts 13 and the winding ratchets 1t aremoved away from their posts increasing the tension of the springs 19. As the wire expands, the springs 19 take up the slack in the wires, such wires moving in the opposite direction, the movement being permitted by the plates 10.
I claim 1. In a device of the class described, a plate provided at opposite ends with outwardly curved portions with slots formed through such outwardly curved portions, pins insertible through the curved portions to secure a wire therein, and means to se cure the plate to a post to permit longitudinal movement.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a wire of a plate having curved portions oifset outwardly therefrom provided with slots proportioned to receive the wire, pins proportioned to be inserted between the wire and the curved side of such oifset portions, means to secure the plate to a post to permit longitudinal movement of the plate and means to compensatefor contraction and expansion of the wire.
3. In a device of the class described, an elongated plate having a slot extending longitudinally thereof, curved oifset portions formed at the opposite ends of the plate, such oifset portions being provided with auxiliary slots, pins insertible through the curved portions adapted to secure a wire therein, and a fastening member inseltible through the longitudinal slot.
