To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN F. ARNOLD, citizen of the United States, and resident of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .Propeller-Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to propeller wheels for steam and other forms of vessels, and is gesigned to be operated in water to drive a oat.
The objects of the invention are to provide an improved form of propeller wheel which includescertain improved features of construction that will tend to increase the speed of the vessel at a given maximum of-power used; also to design the wheel in a simple, practical, and inexpensive manner; to form a construction which will avoid the lateral resistance of the water and enable the power of the propeller to be directly applied in the line of movement of the vessel.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides and consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departure from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Figure 1, shows a side elevation of my improved form of propeller wheel as itwould appear when mounted upon a driving shaft. Fig. 2, is a front view of the propeller shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a rear view of the same.
Referring in detail to the characters of reference marked upon the drawings 5 indicates the propeller shaft, 6 the hub of the propeller wheel which obviously would be secured to the shaft in any desired or preferred manner. To this hub is connected a series of radially disposed blades 7 the outer portions of which are deflected at an angle and provided with extended rear edge portions 8 that serve to produce an increased amount of operative engaging surface and whereby a greater quantity of power is obtained. A conical shaped annular band 9 is secured to the outer edge portion of these blades in any suitable way, and is of a width substantially the same as that of the depth of annular and rearward deflection edge portion of the blades so that the same are properly supported throughout their entire outer edge portion. The larger end portion of this band is thus arranged to the front, while the contracted or narrower portion encircles the rear end portions of the blades. Openings 10 are arranged in this annular band intermediate of the blades and substantially in line with the deflection of each blade so that the water thrust out by said blades may find a suitable radial escape through the said openings as well as through the opening at the rear and intermediate portion of the blades. This band not alone serves to support the paddles, but also to form a shield to engage the water and operate thereagainst in a manner to increase the effective operation of the wheel.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by patent is The combination in a propeller of the class described, of a hub and series of blades having extended rear end portions and a conical shaped annular band surrounding and engaging the edge portion of the blades, and having an opening through the said band between each of the said blades and in line with the operative engaging face of each of said blades.
