UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN R. RUBLE, OF GOLOONDA, ILLINOIS.
WATER-WHEEL OR SHIPS PROPELLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,859, dated February 15, 1857.
Application filed March 4, 1886.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARTIN It. RUBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Golconda, in the county of Pope, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ships Propellers, which improvement is fully set forth in the followingspecification and accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 3 represent top or plan views of propellers embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and at represent side elevations thereof. Fig. 5 represents a sectional view on an enlarged scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a ships or screw propeller, substantially as hereinafter described, whereby its efficiency is increased and other advantages are possessed, as will be stated. 7
Referring to the drawings, A designates the propeller-shaft, to which are secured the cones B B and a wheel, O. The cones B B are arranged opposite to each other to form a double cone, and the wheel 0 is located intermediate of or at the bases of the two cones and provided with a series of spiral blades, D, forming true screws, which constitute the propelling medium, these blades being on the periphery of the wheel, which periphery is flush with thesurfaces of the bases of thecones. The outer edges of the blades D are bent over or otherwise provided with flanges e, which project in the same directions, forward or rearward, with respect to the motion of the vessel.
When the propeller is in use, the cones B B act as deflectors to direct the water from the center of the wheel 0, and by this means a snperiorefitect of the blades D is produced, one of the cones, moreover, tending to prevent churning or back-pressure of the water, and
by floating ice, &c.
Serial No. 193,958. (No model.)
both tending to preventclogging of the screw spiral blades, D, independent of each other in distinction from acontinuous blade, the power of the screw is increased, due to its comparatively large effective area, while by the flanges e the portion of water caught by the blades is prevented from running off the edges thereof, so that the blades may exert the greatest possible force.
WVhen the propeller is used for ocean or deep-water navigation, theflanges 6 may be dispensed with.
The number of propellers employed may be varied as desired.
I am aware that it is not new to form a propellerwheel having blades with flanges; neither is it new to construct the wheel with pointed ends or side pieces, and such I do not claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A screw-propeller composed of a central cylindrical portion or wheel and conical end pieces, the cylindrical portion having thereon a spiral blade forming a true screw, all combined substantially as described.
2. A screw-propeller formed of a central cylindrical wheel and conical end portions, the latter having the outer edges of their bases flush with the periphery, of the cylinder, the wheel having thereona spiral blade forminga true screw, the said blade having a flange on its rim, all combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
