Application filed July 22, 1910. Serial No. 573,229.
To all whom it may, concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM REID, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Propellers, of which i the following is a full, clear, and exact devide a propeller having a plurality of sets of blades having two blades in each set, said blades extending radially from the hub in diametrically opposite directions and the blades of the rear set or sets being directly in the rear of the blades of the forward set.
A further object of the invention is to so space the sets of blades that those of one set will not interfere with the roper working of those of the set next in front, the object being to prevent the rear blades engaging the water from the forward blades.
With these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the propeller. Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a view looking at the ends of the propeller blades.
Referring to the various parts by 1111- merals, 1 designates the propeller shaft; 2 the propeller hub which carries the propeller blades. To this hub are secured two sets of blades A and B, the blades B being the rear blades and the blades A the forward blades. The blades A are arranged radially with respect to the'hub and the longitudinal center line thereof is perpendicular with respect to the propeller shaft. These blades may, of course, be given any desired pitch and may be of any suitable shape. The blades B are placed a suitable distance in the rear of the blades A and the longitudinal center line of each of said blades is oblique to the longitudinal center line of the propeller shaft so that said blades incline rearwardly from the hub. These blades are, of course, arranged at diametrically opposite points as illustrated clearly in Fig. 2 and are directly in the rear of the blades A, as also illustrated clearly in Fig. 2. The purpose of the rearward inclination of these blades B is to prevent said blades receiving the water from the blades A.
The rear blades are arranged oblique to the longitudinal line of the shaft so that the 1 space between the blades is equal to twice the width of the blades from the hub up to their place of greatest width. As the blades, shown in the drawings, gradually increase in width from the hub to a point near their outer ends it is necessary to incline the rear set of blades rearwardly in order to maintain said blades from each other a distance equal to twice the width of the blades. It is manifest that if the blades were of the same width throughout all points in their length they might be arranged parallel.
