, BULL-HOLDER FOR LABELS AND THE LIKE.
amargo.
To allwhoatifit may aannam:
J Be it known that'we, .EUGENE F. CoNNoRs and THEoDoRE N. BARNSDALL, 2d, citizens ofthe United States, residing at Bradford,
.in the county of McKeanand State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roll-Holders. for Labels and the Like, of which-the following is a specicatiomreferenoe being had therein to the accompanying drawing. Y
Our invention relates to improvements in roll holders for labels and the like.
The object of our invention is to provide a holder of this character in which a roll of labels may be readily placed' and fed therefrom land severed vfrom the `roll at the de-.
sired point. l
Another object of our invention is to providea simple, cheap and more effective rollv holder of this character in which the labels are moreevenly fedv therefrom and having certain details of structure hereinafter more fully set forth.
,ln the accompanylng drawings--Figurel is aperspective View of our improved roll holder showing the coverl thrown upwardgexposingthe roll of labels. Fig. 2 is a longitudina-l vertical sectional View 'of Fig. 1. .Fig 3 is a transverse vertical sectional -view taken on the line3-3 of Fig. 2.
While we have shown and described our improved roll holder as usedl for a single roll of labels, it will be understood that it can' be readily made in cabinet form having a series of compartments `in which'a series of rolls of labels can be placed.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents a base for supporting a single roll holder 2. The roll holder 2 is supported upon the base by means of lates 3 and 4 secured thereto by means o screws, or in any other desired manner. rlhe roll holder 2 is preferably of a cylindrical form having heads 5 and 6 of exible material and passing through said heads is a bolt 7, upon which the roll of paper is placed and adapt.
.ed to rotate thereon.. One end ofsaid bolt is provided with a head 8, which is held `Specification of LettersPatent.

'vent the lrapid rotation thereof, as will be hereinafter more 'fully set forth.
The upper end of the cylindrical label holder 2 is opened, andhinged adjacent one iend of said opening is a cover 11, hinged at .12 and-adapted to completely cover the ,open .upper end of the cylindrical body. The cover 11, as shown is of a curved form land having'at its outer end theextendedlip 13, which is provided on its underside at -eachend with the inwardly turned lips or llugs ,14 and 15, which form a guide-way for the ribbon or strip of labels. Theouter end of the lip 13 is sharpened soas t6 form a iknfe edge to cut the labels, as will be here- .inafterthe device. v
The cover 11, as heretofore stated, is of a .curved form and is provided at each-edge -with the .inwardly extending flangeV l16,
.lwhich extends within the cylindrical label jholder 2. Rigidly secured within the z flanges 16, of' the cover intermedia-te its ends, @1s a transverse har-,17, which is spaced from .the cover a distance to allow the free pas-y sage' of the label between vthe same and -Cover. This bar, as shown, will at all times "hold the label in a fiat position so that it will be readily fed between the lip 13 and the two'inwardly turned lugs'14 and 1/5. Secured to the bar 17 is' a spring 18, which extends. forwardly-towardthe lip 13 and engages the under side of Y the llabel and firmly holds it against the inner face of the' cover. The flanges 16, carried bythe cover, as clearly shown in-Figs. 1 and 3, form 'a guide bet-Ween which'the roll of labels freely pass. The spring 18 lbearing against the under side of the label lfrictionally holds it against the under side of the cover 1l, and prevents the label from being pulled too far outwardly. f
rlhe forward edge of the receptacle 2, is providedv l`.with an outwardly vextending vflange 19,j upon which rests the inwardly turnedlugs 14.- and 15, carried by the lip 13, and thus the Vpaper is free to pass from the space -between the lip 13 and the lugs 14 and 15, y
In operation the roll of labels, tags or the like, is placed upon thev rod 7 and they thumb vnut 10 screwed up to cause the proper friction of the heads 5 and 6 against the edge of the roll of labelsso that the roll will not rapidly revolve as the labels are ully described inthe operation of .being drawnthrough the lip. From this it will be seen that the friction on the roll will be the same after a considerable number of labels have been torn from the roll, as it was at the beginning thus causing an equal tension on the rol. The ribbon of the labels pass under 'the bar 17 and is engaged by the spring 18, and thus also passes upwardly between the lugs 14 and 15 and the lip 13.
` By this construction and arrangement of parts, it will be seen that the label is engaged by the lingers belovi7 the lip 13 and drawn outwardly the desired distance, when an upward pull thereon will cause the .knife edge of the lip 13 to sever the label,
' leaving a portion of the succeeding label exour invention.
posed, so that it will be readily grasped by the linger below the lip 18. Vhile we have shown this speciiic construction and arrangement, it will be understood that it can be slightly varied without departing from Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: -A
1. A roll holder` comprising a' central body portion, a curved cover hinged to the body portion and closing the same, a transverse bar carried by the cover and spaced from the cover to form a guide fory the paper, a spring carried by thevbar and engaging the under face of t-he cover for holding the paper against the same, a lip carried by the outer free end' of the cover and inwardly extending flanges carried by -the lip for forminga guide, substantially as shown and described.
2. A roll holder comprising a central body portion having flexible-heads, a bolt passing through the said heads, a roll of paper vupon the bolt between the heads, a
ythumb nut screwed on the bolt on the outside of the heads, a curved cover hinged to the body portion and closing the same, said cover having laterally extending llanges forming a guide for the paper, a bar rigidly secured between the flanges-and forming a guide for the paper, a spring carried by the bar and engaging the under face 0f the paper, a lip carrie-d by the free end of the coverfinwardly extending lugs carried by `the lips to form a guidefor the paper yet a transversebar carried by the said member and spaced therefrom to form a guide for the paper, a spring carried by the of the said member for holding the paper against the same, a lip carried b y the outer free end of the said member and inwardly extending flanges carried by the lip for forming the guide.
5. A roll holder, comprising a body por- .tion having flexible heads, a bolt passing through said heads, a roll of labels mounted drawing the heads inwardly for frictionally engaging the ends of the roll of labels, a member hinged to the said body portion, a transverse bar carried by the said member and spaced therefrom to form a guide for the labels, a spring carried by the transverse bar and engaging the under face of the said member for holding the labels against the same, a lip carried by the outer free end of the said member and inwardly extending flanges carried by the lip for forming the guide on each side of the said hinged member.
6. Aroll holder comprising a body portion having flexible heads, aI bolt passingthrough said heads, a roll of labels mounted on the the heads inwardly for frictionally engaging the ends of the roll of labels, a member lateral side flanges, a transverse bar carried by the flanges and member, to form a guide, a spring. carried by the transverse bar and engaging the 'the labels against the same, a lip carried by the outer free end of the said member and inwardly extending flanges carried by the lip for forming theguide on each side. of the said hinged member.y
In testimony. whereof we hereunto affix on the bolt between the heads, means for' bolt between the heads; means for drawing hinged to the said body portion and having spaced from the under face of the said member for holding.
tion, a member hinged to the body portion,
transverse bar and engaging the under face
