TAPE-MOISTENING MACHINE.
One object of our present invention is to provide an apparatus for supporting a roll of tape and moistening the gum thereon as the tape roll is unwound, comprising a magazine to be located at the under side of the counter or table, for instance, and arranged to receive and support the roll of tape, and a moistening member mounted above the counter or table.
Another object is to provide a moistening device, and a magazine for the tape roll, in combination with a passage for conducting the tape from the magazine to the moisten ing device, and a tensioning device for the tape passing from the magazine to the moistening device.
Another object is to provide an apparatus of the character mentioned, which for shipping and packing purposes, may be disassembled, so that the parts may be packed close together, thereby occupying a minimum amount of space; the device being arranged and constructed so that it can be assembled in operative form after being delivered to the user.
Other objects are to produce a device possessing the highly important characteristics of ease of operation, durability and inexpensiveness of construction and manufacture, and means for mounting rigidly in a small space, so that the device cannot be thrown about or overturned by accident or otherwise.
In the accompanying drawings in which we have illustrated one embodiment of our invention Figure 1 is plan view of the tape moistening and tensioning device, the counter or table being broken away so as to show also a part of the magazine which holds the tape roll. The magazine consists of two end walls 1 each having a series of projections 2 arranged to extend through slots in the magazine drum 3 and be clamped thereon, as 8. This constitutes a knock-down magazine which can be separated for packing or shipping purposes and which need not be assembled at all prior to its first installation for actual use. Being composed of sheet metal the walls 1 may lie flat and the wall 3 may also be laid flat so as to occupy a minimum amount of space, before being assembled. The magazine may be used as a single compartment to contain a wide roll of tape or it may be divided into two or more compartments to contain a like number of narrow rolls of tape, as desired. For purposes of dividing the magazine into compartments we have shown a form of partition 5, which is a sheet metal disk similar to the end walls 1 except that said disk 5 has a single projectioii 6 arranged to pass through any one or a number of slots 7 in the wall 3 at the bottom of the magazine.
The magazine is intended primarily to be supported by the under side of a table or counter or other support A. The tape roll being mounted in the magazine must be accessible from the upper side of the counter or support, and for such purposes we have provided a passage 8 through which the tape may be extended and drawn, as desired. This passage 8, in the embodiment shown, is a rectangular frame mounted in a slot in the top of the counter or support and provided with flanges 9 resting upon the upper surface of the counter or support. One of the end walls of the passage is extended downwardly so as to form an eye or loop 10 and the other end wall terminates in a hook 11. The end walls 1 of the magazine and the partitions 5 are provided with extensions 12 on their upper edges in which are formed holes arranged to receive the two arms of the hanger member 13, in the manner shown in Figs. 2 and 4:. One end of the hanger member is intended to extend through the eye or loop 10 and the opposite end of said member is arranged to extend .over the hook 11, thereby suspending the magazine so that the tape B may be passed through the passage 8 so as to be accessible for use above the counter, table or support.
The moistcning device is arranged to be mounted above the counter, table or support substantially in the manner illustrated. The said moistcning device includes a base 14: arranged to rest upon the counter or other support. The base, in the embodiment shown, is in the form of a frame having portions 15 ar ranged to rest upon the table and to receive the screws 16 for fastening and holding the base firmly in position. The base extends over one of the flanges 9 and terminates near the passage 8 through which the tape is drawn from the magazine below the counter, etc. One of the standards 17 carries a bracket 18 which supports three tensioning arms 19 between and around which the tape may be passed and drawn in the manner shown in Fig. 2. The said arms serve as tensioning devices to hold the tape and prevent it from being drawn so rapidly as to become unwound and, therefore, entangling in the magazine. A rod 20 is formed with a hole 21 near one end which receives one of the standards 17 and with a slot 22 in the opposite end which receives the other one of said standards 22. The slotted end of the rod is threaded so that the thumb nut 23 may be manipulated to bind and hold the rod in any position in which it may be placed. By loosening the nut 23 the rod 20 may be moved to any desired position. It is preferable that said rod be located in such position that the tape passing from the tension rods 19 will pass thereover.
A container 2% is adjustably supported upon the base 14: having extensions 25 at its ends arranged to move in the channels 26. A spring 27 on the under side of the container engages with a part of the base and constitutes a yieldin device for holding the container in whatever position it may be placed. As shown, the container may be moved toward or away from the tape tension devices, and said container will be retained in any desired adjustment by its spring 27, as stated. A tubular roll 28 is revolubly supported within the container 24 by axial trunnions 29 rigid or integral with cross members 80 near the ends of said roller. Said trunnions :29, which are journaled in bearings 81, formed in any suitable manner at the end walls of the container. The arrangement is such that the roll will be sup ported out of contact with the bottom and end walls of the container and will extend a suitable distance above the front and rear walls of the container (Fig. 2). The container is arranged to contain water by which the tape is to be moistened. As the tape is drawn from the tensioning rods it will press upon the upper side of the roller, as shown in Fig. 2, and thereby rotate said passage through said roller, the surface of the roller being kept moistened by its operation through the wa ter in the container. Thus the tape is automatically moistened as it is drawn from the magazine, it being understood that it is the gummed side of the tape which contacts with the wet roller.
The standards 17 carry a serrated blade or cutter 32 by which the tape may be easily cut or separated at any desired place in the manner which is well understood. The end of the tape will then be supported out of contact with the container and roller by the adjustable rod 20.
We are aware that there may be many variations in the construction and arrangement of the parts within equivalent limits, without departure from the spirit and scope of our invention. We do not restrict ourselves to specific details, but
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent isl. The combination with a support, a support from the upper side to the lower side thereof, a magazine having an open side and arranged to contain a roll of tape, and means for sup porting said magazine at one side of said support, of a tensioning device on the opposite side of said support arranged to re ceive and tension the tape going from said magazine through said passage, a moistening device movably supported with respect to said tensioning device, and a support for the end of the tape between said tensioning device and said moistening device, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a support, a magazine carried on one side of said support and arranged to contain a roll of tape, a passage-way through said support, a tensioning device near said passage-way arranged to receive and tension the tape coming from said magazine through said passage-way, a container movably mounted near said tensioning device, and means holding said container in any desired position with respect to said tensioning device, substantially as specified.
3. The combination with a magazine arranged to hold a roll of tape, a container arranged to contain moistcning fluid, and a roll mounted in said container, of a tensioning device arranged to receive and tension the tape passing from said magazine, a base on which said container is movably mounted, and means holding said container in any desired adjustment on said base, with respect to said tensioning device, substantially as specified.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a tensioning device arranged to receive and tension a band of tape, standards extending above said tensioning device, a guide rod movably supported by said standards, and means for holding said guide rod in any desired ad justment on said standards, of a base mounted near said tensioning device and guide rod, a container movably mounted on said base and being adjustable, with reference to said guide rod and tensioning device, means holding said container in any desired adjustment, and a roll revolubly mounted in said container, substantially as described.
5. A device of the character described, comprising a number of standards, a tensioning device supported by said standards, a guide rod movably supported by said standards, means for holding said guide rod in any desired adjustment on said standards, a cutter supported by said standards, and a base, in combination with a container movably mounted on said base, a device holding said container in any desired adjustment on said base, and a roll mounted in said container, substantially as described.
6. The combination with a support, a passage extending through said support, and a magazine removably carried by said passage at one side of said support, of a number of standards carried by said support at the side opposite from said magazine, a series of arms attached to one of said standards, a moistening device movably supported near said arms and means holding said moistening device in any desired adjustment, with respect to said arms, substantially as specified.
7. In a device of the character described, a tensioning device arranged to receive and tension a strip of tape, a base near said tensioning device, a container mounted on said base and being movable toward and away from said tensioning device, a device effective to hold said container in any desired adjustment, with respect to said tensioning device, a roll mounted in said container, supporting standards between said container and said tensioning device, a guide rod movably mounted on said standards, and means holding said guide rod in any desired adjustment on said standards, substantially as specified.
8. In a device of the character described, a magazine, a removable partition whereby said magazine may be divided into two compartments of equal size, or different sizes, as desired, said compartments being arranged to contain rolls of tape, means holding saidpartition in any of its different adjustments, a tensioning device arranged to receive and tension all of the strips of tape passing through said magazine, a container movable with respect to said tensioning device, means holding said container in any desired adjustment, a moistening roll mounted in said container over which all the strips of tape may be drawn, means whereby the strips of tape may be severed between said moistening roll and said tensioning device, a support between said tensioning device and said container for holding the ends of the tape out of said container, and means for holding said support in any desired adjustment with respect to said tensioning device and said container, substantially as specified.
9. A machine of the character described, comprising a roll receptacle having a curved bottom wall provided with a series of slots, a partition plate having its base portion received in one of said slots, a hanger member suspending said receptacle and engaging the upper end of said partition, a moistening device in front of said receptacle, and a severing device above said moistening device.
