CAKE-TURNER.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ENos M. HARPER, -a
citizen of the United States, residing at Setauket, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cake-Turners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to cake turner-s and particularly to one having means for oscillating the blade whereby the cakes are turned with a very slight exertion by the user.
The invention has for its object to construct a device of this character which is simple in construction, eflicient in operation and one which may be cheaply manufactured.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which,

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a handle, the same having a longitudinal groove 2, the inner end of which terminates at a pocket 3. Near the outer end of the handle is formed a transverse groove 4:. A shank 5 having attached to its outer end a turning blade 6 is provided, the inner end of said shank being adapted to rest within the groove 2, the extreme inner end of the shank being provided with a circular flange 7. The flange 7 is adapted to rest in the pocket 3 and tends to prevent endwise movement of the shank 5. The shank 5 is flattened slightly at a point adjacent its inner end and is provided with a perforation 8. A coil spring 9 surrounds the inner end of the shank 5 and has its outer terminal passed through the opening 8 formed therein,'the inner terminal of said spring being passed over the flange 7 and is suitably anchored in the handle 1. The shank 5 is further provided. with a flat surface 10 and upon which is rigidly secured the inner end of a lever 11, said lever being Specification of Letters Patent. 7 PatentedJun 11, 1912, Application filed September 20, 1911.

Adapted to be placed over the end of the handle 1 is a ferrule 12, the same consisting of upper and lower sections 13 and 14, respectively, the outer end of each section being provided with a wall 15, the opposing edges of which are provided with semi-circular depressions 16, which, when confronting, form an opening for the passage of the shank 5. The walls 15 are hingedly connected, as indicated at 17 in the drawing.
The upper section 13 of the ferrule is formed with a transverse slot 18 and through which the lever v11 passes when assembling the device, the outer walls 19 of the slot 18 limiting the movement of the lever 11 during the operation of turning the cake and,
after the same has been turned, thereby positioning the lever in its proper place for further operation.
The ferrule may be secured to the handle by tacks or the like, which are passed through suitable perforations formed near the inner ends of the sections 13 and 14.
The manner of using the device will be obvious when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and description.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A cake turner comprising a handle provided with a longitudinal groove in one end, a shank rotatably mounted in said groove, said handle also having a transverse groove communicating with said longitudinal groove, an operating lever rigidly connected to the shank and movable in the transverse groove, a spring connected to the shank and to the handle and yieldingly holding said shank against rotation, and a ferrule secured upon the end of the handle to retain the rod in the longitudinal groove thereof, said ferrule consisting of two sections hingedly connected together at one of their ends. a
shank and having its outer terminal secured. in the aperture and its inner terminal passing over the flange and anchored in the handle, a lever rigidly connected to the shank and near the inner end thereof, a ferrule consisting of upper and lower sections hingedly connected, said ferrule being adapted to inclose the inner end of the shank and handle, a slot formed in the upper section of the ferrule and through which the 10 lever is passed, said lever being operable to rotate the shank to turn a cake.
