To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FERNAND A. BRoUs- SARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carencro, in the parish of Lafayette and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stoves and Furnaces, of which the following isa specification. c

It is the object of the present invention to provide a novel stove or furnace designed particularly for use in heating a wash boiler while the clothes within the boiler are undergoing a washing process.

The invention therefore aims primarily to provide a furnace adapted to firmly support the wash boiler in convenient position for use and one which will not become so heated as to inconvenience the person washing the clothes within the boiler.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in a furnace for the purpose specified, an improved form of fire box and grate, both being removable from the casing of the furnace and being constructed to sup port the burning fuel at such distance from the walls of the casing as to preclude heating of these walls to such degree as to discomfort the person using the furnace.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through a stove or a furnace constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.

In the drawings, the numeral 5 indicates the casing of the furnace of which the side walls are indicated by the numeral 6, the rear wall by the numeral 7 the bottom by the numeral 8, the front wall by the numeral 9, and the top by the numeral 10. The front 9 of the casing is closed by a door 10 having upon it a draft door 11 of the usual construction. It is preferable that the door 10 be hinged at its lower edge to the forward edge of the bottom 8 of the casing and that it extend practically the entire width of the said front 9.

For a purpose to be presently explained, the top 10 of the fire box is formed with an opening 12 which is preferably circular and fitted in this opening, removably, is a ring 13 designed to reduce the size of the opening when in place therein. One or more rings 14 may be nested within the ring 13 and within each other whereby to further diminish the size of the opening in the top of the casing.

The wash boiler employed in connection with the furnace is indicated by the numeral 15 and may be of the form here shown or of any other suitable form and it is removablv inserted in the opening in the top of the casing or in the openingof one or the other of the rings 13 or 14, depending upon its dimensions. A draft flue 16 communicates with the top of the casing at the rear end thereof.

The ash pit and fire box are formed by the bottom 17 and side walls 18, which are inclined upwardly and outwardly at the angle shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the portion below the grate 22 being the ash pit while that above is the fire box.

The side walls are connected at their rear ends by a back wall 19, and open at its front as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

It will be observed from an inspection of Fig. 2 of the drawings, that the side walls 18 are double or hollow and a quantity of sand, loam, or other material is packed between the walls to prevent, to as great an extent as possible, the conduction of heat to the side walls 6 of the casing. It will further be observed that the side walls 18 .are entirely spaced from the side walls of the casing as is also the back wall of the combined ash pit and fire box from the back wall 7 of the casing. Also, the combined ash pit and fire box has a maximum width less than the width of the door opening in the front wall 9 of the casing whereby it may be bodily removed through this opening.

Extending lengthwise of the inner surface of each side wall 18 of the combined ash pit and fire box is a flange 21 upon which flanges rest the side edges of a transversely arched grate 22.

Fromthe foregoing description of the invention it will be readily understood that the fuel is placed upon the grate 22 and that the ashes from the fuel are received on the bottom 'of the ash pit beneath the grate 22. It will further be understood that owing to the peculiar form of the side walls 18 of the combined ash pit and fire box and the fact that these walls are considerably spaced from the side walls of the casing, the latter walls will not become heated to such degree as to discomfort the person using, the furnace for the purpose of boiling clothes while they are being washed. Consequently, the person using the furnace may stand close to the side walls thereof and conveniently reach within the wash boiler 15.

What is claimed is I A stove or furnace, comprising a casing rectangular in shape and provided with an enlarged aperture in one end thereof, and a removable closure therefor, of a combined ash pit and fire box removably mounted within the casing through the open end controlled aperture end thereof, and a curved grate disposed between the inclined walls of the combined ash pit and fire box and dividing the same into the ash'pit and fire box, the inclined walls of the combined 'asli pit and fire box being spaced apart, the

space between the same having a heat insulating filling therein.
