Be it known that I, JOHN T. LESHER, a eilizen of the United States, residing at Berrysburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvem entsin Stoves; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of my invention is to provide a stove of simple and compact construction that may be used for purposes of ordinary cooking as well as for general heating and for kettle-heating, the same being so constituted as readily and quickly to be convertible for adaptation to these various purposes.

lVith these objects in view the invention resides, generally stated, in a stove provided with a top having an opening therein to be engaged by a plate to carry lids, the interior of the stove being provided with a grate and ireback and with partitions and side walls of particular construction to be removed at will to adapt the stove .for use 'for various heating purposes.

The invention consists, furthermore, in the novel construction and combination of parts of a stove, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, I have exhibited two modes of employment of the stove characterized byrmy invention, it being understood that the same may be employed for other purposes than those shown without departing from the spirit of the same, and in these drawings- Figure l is a perspective view of the stove, showing it adapted for heating and kettle purposes. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the stove when used for cooking pur-v poses. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the stove, illustrating the removable upper grate, the hollow side portions, and removable partition. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the stove with the top removed. Fig. 5 is alongitndinal sectional View of the stove, illustrating the lower grate as a substitution for the upper grate and certain parts being removed. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a plan view of Fig. 6, showing the top plate removed. Fig. S is a similar transverse sectional view with certain of the parts removed.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the stove, the same heilig by preference in front elevation hopper-shaped and in side elevation rectangular. The object of forming the casing hopper-shaped is with comparatively narrow base to provide a Wide top to accommodate the kettle, as will be hereinafter described. It will be understood, however, that l do not limit my invention to this particular shape of the casing, as it may be made rectangular orot' other forms without departing from the spirit ofthe invention. The front wall ofthe easing is provided With the usual draft-doors a a2 and with a grate-door a3, as usual.

When the stove is used for cooking pur poses, the grate B is of comparatively short length and may be constructed in any preferred manner and supported in the {ire-pot, as usual. The portion back ot' the rear end of the grate to the rear end of the casing is closed by the partition l), which is shaped to conform to the interior of the stove and is held in place by guides b2, secured to the sides ol' the casi ng,and ahorizontal plate hwhich rests upon the top of the partition Z) and upon supports h4 on the back wall of the casing,

the horizontal plate being provided on its un der side with a transverse flange b5 to engage with the horizontal plate b3 to retain the latter in rigid vertical position. As shown in Fig. 4, the plate b3 is made in two parts, this being done in order to permit the plate be* ing inserted in position, as shown; otherwise it would not be possible to insert the plate through the opening in the top plate of the stove. At the rear of the casing is the usual escape-pipe h6. To protect the'plate b3 from the action of heat from the grate, a removable` reback l is employed, this to be inserted in position and to rest upon the grate and to lean against the plate b3 when the stove is used for cooking purposes. The side walls of the casing are protected by hollow {ire-bricks bs, the same bein g removable when the stove is to be utilized for heating purposes. When the stove is used for cooking purposes, a plate U is employed, which closes a large circular opening bw, as will hereinafter appear, being of sueientarea to permit kettles of large size to rest therein and to be supported by the walls thereof. The

plate b9 is formed with any number of open- IOO ings, in this instance four, which are engaged by ordinary lids b, so that by removing these lids, as will be readily understood, articles of food may be cooked or the pot or kettle may be positioned on the lid, as usual.

When the stove is to be used for kettle purposes, the horizontal plate b3 is first removed, then the fireback 197, then the partition b, and then lthe grate B, the fire-bricks bs being left in place. A second grate C is then inserted in the stove, its front end resting on a flange c, formed on the rear wall of the front adjacent to the ash-pit, a plate c2, constituting the reback, being placed within the ash-pit Opening and bearing at its upper edge against the back of the casing and at its lower edge against the back of the grate. The plate bf is now removed and the kettle placed in the opening in the top of the lid. The use of the kettle is for scalding hogs, boiling apple-butter, or for any other use that may be desired.

In connection with the stove when used for kettle purposes I may employ a derrick D, the same comprising an ordinary swinging arm and a crank, around the spindle of which is wound a rope to engage the bail of the kettle. To lift the kettle from the stove, it will only be necessary to turn the crank to lift the kettle upward and then by swinging the derrick around the kettle may be deposited upon the ground.

The stove herein described, whether used for cooking purposes or kettle purposes or for heating purposes, is exceedingly simple of construction and will be found of the highest efficiency and durability in use.

To convert the stove from a cooking-stove to a kettle-stove will require but small exertion, as only the parts enumerated have to be removed, and the insertion of the grate C will be a matter easily accomplished.

Having thus fully described my invent-ion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. A stove adapted to be utilized for cooking, kettle, or heating purposes, provided interiorly with means for supporting grates of dierent sizes and at different levels and having removable partitions and removable hollow side portions.

2. A stove adapted to be utilized for cooking, kettle, or heating purposes, provided interiorly with means for supporting grates of different sizes and at different levels and having a removable partition between the smaller grate and the rear wall of the stove, and formed with an opening through Which the removable parts may be taken out and others substituted.

3. A stove of a character substantially as specified, comprising a top having a large opening closed by a plate carrying lids, agi-ate arranged below the opening and of comparatively short length, a partition arranged back of the grate, a horizontal plate extending from the partition to the back of the stove,

removable hollow lire-bricks on each side of the fire-chamber, and suitable doors or dampers in front of the stove, substantially as described.

4. A stove of the character specified, comprisin g a casing having a removable top plate provided'with openings adapted to be engaged by ordinary lids, and provided interiorly with means for supporting removable grates of different sizes at different levels, and a removable partition adapted to be inserted between the smaller grate and the rear wall of the stove-casing, substantially as described.

5. A stove of the character specified, comprising a casing having a removable top plate provided with Openings adapted to be engaged by ordinary lids, and provided interiorly with means for supporting removable grates of different sizes at different levels, a removable partition adaptedto be inserted between the smaller grate and the rear wall of the stovecasing, and removable sections of fire-brick lining, substantially as described.

G. A stove of the character specified, comprising a casing having a removable top plate provided with openings adapted to be engaged by ordinary lids, and provided interiorly with means for supporting removable grates of different sizes at different levels, a removable partition adapted to be inserted between the smaller grate and the rear wall of the stovecasing, and a removable plate adapted to underlie the top of the stovecasing, substantially as described.

7. A stove of the character specified, cornprising a casing having a removable top plate provided with openings adapted to be engaged by ordinary lids, and provided interiorly with means for supporting removable grates of different sizes at different levels, a removable partition adapted to be inserted between the smaller grate and the rear wall of the stovecasing, removable sections of fire-brick lining, and a removable plate adapted to underlie the top of the stove-casing, substantially as described.

8. A stove of the character specified, comprising a casing having a removable top plate provided with openings adapted to be engaged by ordinary lids, and provided interiorly with means for supporting removable grates of different sizes at different levels, the smaller grate being supported above the larger grate, a removable partition adapted to be inserted between the smaller grate and the rear wall of the stove-casing, removable sections of firebrick lining, and a removable plate adapted to underlie the top of the stove-casing and extend from the first-named partition to the rear wall of the stove-Casin g, substantially as described.
