To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Metaline, in the county of Stevens, State of useful Improvements in Saw-Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as-will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same;
My invention relates to improvements in saw clamps and my object is to improve the construction and increase the efliciency and utility of devices of this character.
A further object of the invention is to provide a form of saw clamp which will be readily attachable to tables, benches or the like, and it will also be understood that a primary object which governs to some extent every other consideration is to reduce the cost of the. deviceto the lowest limit consistent with efliciency and durability.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists primarily in a slotted U-shaped frame, comprising an upper horizontal stationary jaw, a horizontal slidable jaw to coact therewith, means for actuating said sliding jaw and means for securing the device as a whole to a suitable support.
The invent-ion further consists in a certain construction and arrangement of parts and details as is hereinafter more fully described, specifically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which show a preferred embodiment of the invention.
In these drawings which are attached and form a part of this application, Figure 1 is a plan view of the device, Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof, Fig. 3 is an end elevation,
the actuating cam lever. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary elevation showing how one of the clamp members is secured to the main bar of the frame.
Referring more specifically to these views in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout, 1 indicates in general the frame of the device which as shown comprises a. main longi tudinal bar 2 to which are pivotally secured the depending end bars 3 and 4. It will be seen that these bars are hinged to the horizontal frame bar at the points 6 and 7 Each of the end bars is return-bent to form the slot 5 and the end of the return-bent section is provided with a hinge connection 8 co-aXial with the hinges ,6 and 7 and supported by these hinges 8 is the outer or stationary aw 9.
Adjacent the ends of the frame member 2 are a pair of vertical studs 10 and intermediate the length of the bar is a central stud 11. Slidably mounted, for transverse move ment by means of slots 12 coacting with these studs is the slidable jaw or clamp, here designated as 14. In order to force this jaw outwardly a cam lever 15 is pivoted further preventiveagainst chattering it may be desirable to form the cont-acting or bearing faces of the jaws as curves of comparatively long radius.
In order to secure the clamp thus described to a workbench, table or the like the depending members 3 and 4 are provided with laterally extending arms 20, through which are threaded clamp screws 21, which as shown are of the conventional type and provided with thumb grips 23. Vertically above the clamp screws the top frame member 2 has extended portions 24. Referring to the end elevation of Fig. 8 it will be seen that the edge of a table may be gripped between the clamp screw and the top member 24 and the whole device thus firmly secured.
My improved saw clamp is adapted for use with straight edge saws of various types, can be extended into the straight line form for packing the same in tool boxes or for shipment, and is believed to fulfil satisfactorily the requirements of simplicity and reasonable cost of manufacture in that it consists largely of standard elements, con tains few moving parts and these so arranged that the danger of derangement is reduced to a minimum.

In a device of theclass described, a horizontal frame member, a pair of depend ing U-shaped members pivoted in the ends thereof, a stationary jaw member carried between pivots in the return-bent ends of said U-shaped members, said pivots being coaxial with said first named pivots, a plurality of vertical studs secured in said horizontal frame member, a movable jaw provided with transverse slots adapted to bear over said studs, a cam lever pivoted on one of said studs and adapted to bear against said movable jaw, laterally extending portions adjacent the ends of said horizontal 3.
