CHARLES FREDERICK BILLAU, OF CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA.
CUTTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1912.
Application filed October 17, 1911. Serial No. 655,112.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, QHARLES F. BILLAU, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Cutting Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates generally to cutting devices and more particularly involves an attachment especially adapted for use on a persons finger in cutting flowers, fruit, twine, or similar articles.
The object of my invention is to provide such a device which shall be of simple construction, thereby providing for its disposal at a low cost.
A further object of my invention is to provide such a device of simple construction and one so arranged that it will not turn on the finger when in use.
A further object of the invention is to rovide such a device having a blade removably held thereon whereby it may be easily taken off for sharpening.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device in position for use; Fig. 2 is an end view thereof; Fig. 3 is an end view of a modified form.
The cutting device is made up of a cylindrical member 1 not unlike a thimble, each end, however, being preferably open; in order to provide for being secured on the finger, the member 1 is preferably of frustoconical formation whereby the forward open end 2 is of less diameter than the rear open end 8.
The cutting blade 4, which may be of any suitable size, is removably secured in a U-shaped holder 5 secured to the side of the member'l in any suitable manner, as by soldering or otherwise.
Referring particularly to Fig. 2, it is to be noted that the member 1 at the portion where the holder 5 is secured thereto at 6 is flattened whereby the outer open end 2 has a straight portion 7 and the rear open end 3 has a straight portion 8, the body of the holder between these portions being plane so that when the finger is inserted in the device and pressure brought to bear against the cut-ting edge, the member 1 or the thimble will not turn on the finger. Of course this same purpose may be attained by providing the holder 1 with a longitudinally extending channel or groove.
While the device just described is intended for use on the right hand it is ob vious that a device may be produced which is equally well adapted for use on either hand, one form being shown in Fig. 3 wherein the holder 1 has the U-shaped blade holders 5*, 5 secured thereto, the blades 4 extending in opposite directions. In this instance there are two flat or plane surfaces 7 7", extending the length of the holder, these surfaces forming an extended bearing portion for the blade holders and, at the same time, so engaging a persons finger that the device is held against turning when it is in use.
My device may be put to a variety of uses and the size thereof and the material of which it is made may be varied in order to meet different conditions without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
: Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent A device of the class described comprising a frusto-conical member of integral sheet metal construction adapted to be p0- sitioned on a finger, a portion of the said member being flattened, whereby a plane surface is provided, a U-shaped holder carried thereby, one side of the said holder being secured throughout its length to the said flattened portion, together with a blade positioned between the sides of the said U-shaped holder, the said plane surface of the frusto-conical member on the inside of the holder tending to prevent the device from turning when it is positioned on a finger.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES FREDERICK BILLAU.
