WHIP-LOCKING SOCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 12, 1911.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT A. Ln GENDRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVarren, inthe county of Bradley and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in WVhip-Locking Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in whip sockets.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a whip socket having means whereby the whip will be effectively locked within the socket throughrthe medium of a resilient element being turned to engage with the socket, means being also provided for locking the resilient element upon the whip and for permitting the automatic return of the said resilient element to unlock the whip.
With the above objects, and others of a similar nature in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings,Figu1-e 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken through a device constructed in accordance with my invention, the whip being shown in a locked position within the socket. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the whip in its unlocked position. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view upon the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the device, the whip being removed.
Referring now to the drawings, in detail, the numeral 1 designates the socket. This socket may be constructed in any ordinary manner, the same being preferably formed of suitable metal, and the said socket is provided adjacent its open mouth with an outwardly bulging portion 2. This bulging portion is provided with teeth or indentations 3, the said teeth or indentations adapted to coact with similar teeth or indentations 4 provided upon the lower flanged edge of the cap 5. The cap 5 is centrally provided with an opening, 6, through which the stock 7 of the whip is extended within the socket 1.
The numeral 8 designates a vertically depending rod which is rigidly secured to the cap 5. The lower extension'of this rod is adapted to receive the upper convolution of a flattened resilient element 9. The lower convolution of this element 9 is secured to the socket 1 as at 10, and by reference to the figures of the drawings, it will be noted that the resilient member 9 when expanded provides a suflicient space between its convolutions for the reception of the stock or end 7 of the whip. It will be further noted by reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings, that upon the rotation of the cap 5 the convolutions of the element 9 will be compressed so as to close the said member upon the stock or end 7 of the whip. When this has been accomplished it is merely necessary to raise the cap 5 so that its teeth 4 engage with the teeth 3 adjacent the open end of the socket 1. This effectively sustains the whip within the socket against accidental removal, and it will be further noted that when the cap is forced downwardly so as to bring its teeth 4 away from the teeth 3 of the socket, the said cap will revolve so as to permit of the expansion of the resilient element 9 and for allowing the withdrawal of the whip.
Having thus fully described the said invention, what I claim is 1. A whip socket having its upper end provided with teeth, a cap having a flange also provided with teeth, said cap having a whip receiving opening, and a resilient member forming a plurality of convolutions connected with the cap and with the socket.
2. A whip socket having an annular bulging portion below its open mouth, the said bulging portion being provided with teeth or indentations, a cap having a continuous flange, the lower portion of the said flange being inturned and provided with teeth or indentations, the cap having a downwardly extending member, a helical resilient element connected with the said member, and the free end of the said resilient member being secured within the socket, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
