Description

0, which passes through slots c' made lengthwise of JAMES W. FIELD, OF MAIRYSVILLE, OHIO.
Leiters Patent No. 102,795, dated May 10', 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN NEEDLE-SETTERS FOR SE'Vi'Il'G-MA[(LHIN'ES.l
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part of the same,
To all Awhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. FiELD, of Marysville, in the county of Union and Stato of' Ohio, have invented a new and improved Sewing-machine Needle- Setter; and i do hereby declare that the followingr is la full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings malo ing a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation;
Figure 2, a plan view and Figure 3 is a transverse sectional elevation.
This invention has forvits object to enable the oper-A ator of a sewing-machine to set a fresh needle in that position in the holder which will give the desired length of loop, withon the trouble and delay of adjustment on his part.
In the drawings is figured a pair of pineers to the extremity of the arm a, ot' which is securely attached a vertical bar, b, the inner side of which may be channeled lengthwise for the reception ofthe needle orleft plane, or provided with a rib to enter the groove of the needle. The other arin, a', of the pineers is bowed outward, 1,and its extremity bears directly upon the needle, clamping it against the plate b, when the slide both arms of the pineers, is moved tar enough toward the ends of the larms to bring the requisite pressure I to bear upon them.
A conical tooth, d, projects through the channel of the bar b,'near the lower. extremity ofthe same, which l ythe gauge is to take the depth to which the head of the needle enters thc needle-holder, when the needle is in the proper position for making loops of the re- ,l quired size, and to preserve the record of such depth by means ot'its set-screw, so that, when a fresh needle has to be set, it may be placed at the desired dept-h at once without trial.
The tooth d is ailixed to a spring-plate, d', attached to the opposite side of the har b. The tooth passes through a. hole in the plate. The spring fl' and the conical l'orm of the tooth adapt it to needle-eyes of all sizes..
Having thus described my inif'ention,
What; I claim as new7 and desire to secure by Let-4 ters Patent, is-
The bar b, provided with the gauge el and spring d', the lutter being furnished with the tooth (Z, in combination with the pineers a a', provided with the slot c' and slide c, all constructed and arranged to operate in the manner described.
