WINDOW-HOLDER FOR SLIDING SASI-IES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM STEWART MAsoN and EDWARD JARVIS MASON, subjects of the King of England, residing at Leicester, in the county of Leicester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVindow-Holders for Sliding Sashes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in window holders for sliding sashes in which a wheel or runner adapted to bear against the sash or against the fixed frame in which the sash slides is rotated by frictional contact during the raising of the sash,
and will hold the said sash in any raised position and the objects of our improvements are, first, to construct sucha holder in a form in which it is more easily and economically fixed in position; second, to reduce the cost of window sashes and frames by eliminating the cost of sash weights and cords and sash weight pockets in the window frames; and, third, to reduce the cost of production of such window holders. 7e attain these objects by the parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the entire window holder; Fig. 2, a partial vertical section and Fig. 3, a cross section of the wheel or runner in its cylindrical casing.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The main body A is cylindrical for the reason that a circular recess in the window sash or window frame to receive it, is more quickly and cheaply made than any other shape and the design and construction of the holder has therefore been subordinated to this shape. The said body A has formed thereon a longitudinal outside rib A in which is a longitudinal recess A The rib A forms its own passage in the woodwork as the holder is belng driven or pressed into position in the window frame or sash, while Specification of Letters Patent.

the recess A receives therein a rib 13 extending longitudinally on the cylindrical casing B and prevents the latter from turning. The casing B contains the wheel or runner C, sustained therein in the manner hereinafter described.
In the body A is placed a spring (Z with one end bearing against the back of the casing B to push the latter forward and consequently project the wheel or runner C forward and cause it to hold the window sash suspended by reason of its frictional contact with the window frame or window sash.
The wheel or runner C is a hollow body through which is passed a square aXle D whose two ends fit in openings 13 formed in the casing B, thus eliminating any turning tendency of the said axle.
Contained within the wheel or runner C is a disk E the periphery of which is formed into teeth E which project to one side of said disk E to engage with projections C formed on one side of the wheel or runner C, the disk E being so pressed into engagement by a spring F. It will be understood that as the window sash is raised the wheel or runner C is freely rotated on the circular parts D D of the axle D, but when the sash is stationary the projections C of the said wheel C are engaged by the teeth E of the disk E which cannot rotate, though it is movable along the axle D under the action of the wheel G as the sash is raised.
A front plate G held by the claws G G to the front flange A of the body A, imparts a finish to the holder.
We are aware that prior to our invention window sash holders have been made having ratchet wheels and pawls so constructed as to hold a roller and prevent its rotation by the weight of the window sash; we therefore do not claim such a combination broadly; but
We claim:
1. The combination in a window sash holder, of a cylindrical hollow body having a longitudinal rib, with a cylindrical casing containing the ratchet controlled wheel or runner and a rib engaging in a recess in the In witness whereof We have signed our 10 rlb of the hollow body, all substantlally as names to this specificatlon 1n the presence of set forth. two subscrlblng wltnesses.
