WALTERQALDWELLOF BRYAN, o HIo.
Letters Patent No. 102,771, dated May 10, 1870.
v The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER CALDWELL, of Bryan,
mathe county of Williams and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fall-leaf' Tables; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, .and beinga part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective of my table, folded for transportation.
u Figure 2 isa perspective my table, with top removed.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan of the top.
Like letters indicate like parts in each figure.
The nature of this invention relates to an improved construction of fall-leaf tables of all kinds, so arranged that the same may be folded into a very compact form for transportation, and, when required, unfolded and enlarged to any desired size, with a broad and firm base.
The invention consists in making the top into four or more sections, secured to each other in the usual manner, with rule-joints and hinges, andin the peculiar attachment thereto of' the legs, as more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings- A B C D represent four sections of a table top, secured to. each other by the ordinary rule-joint and hinges E, the width of the sections() D being equal to the width of the section or leaf A, while the section B forms the center section, to which is secured the supports.
plan of the supports of F is a rail or sill secured longitudinally to the under side of the section B, nd has secured to the center of its length proper 1 gs or ears a, to which are pivoted, as shown, the four arms, G, to the outer ends of which are secured, in any convenient way, the legs H.
When it is-desired that the table should assume the most compact form possible, the leg: a'nd arms are folded against the sill F, w en they occupy the space of the width of the section B of the top, allowing the section A to fall against one side, while theI two sections, G D,` fall against the opposite side ot'y the legs.
When it is desired to ha\'e the table a little wider,
two of the'legs may be slightly drawn out'on one side, to support the sect-ion C, which then becomes a pai-'t of the top plane with the section B. A still further drawing out of theleg'supougthe same side will sus tain the section D upon tll 'saine plane, and the draw` ing out of the oppositelegs will sustain the section A, when a large, table top may be presented. These sections of the top may be increased in number a's desired, thereby making a table of any required size.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Paten t, is-
The table top, when composed of four or more sections, A B C D,V in combination with the sill F, arms G, and legs H, when said arms are pivoted to said sill F, as described and for the purpose set forth.
WALTER CALDWELL.
