IMPROVEMENT IN COPY-BOOKS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PHILIP 4F. VAN Evannx, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Covers and Blotters of\V1iting-Books; and I hereby declare that the following is a full description thereot', reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

In the accompanying drawings- Figure l is a perspective view of a copy-book provided with improved supplementary covers, the book being open. v

Figure 2 is also a perspective view ofthe same, the. book being shut, and the blotter being spread open on one side.

Figure 3 is a perspective vie-w of the supplementary cover separate from the book, the cover and also the blotter being part way open.

In the use ot' writing books thel covers often get soiled and worn, and a loose blot-ter is frequent-ly misplaced, andthe book being suddenly shut up, while the ink is not dry, the book is disgured by blots. The object of my invention is to prevent these ditticulties, and to preserve the writing-book in a neat condition until it is completely written through.

My invention consists of a supplementary cover combined with a blotter b1' Writing-books.

In the manufacture of my combined writing-book, cover, and blotter, the. covers may-be made of suitable size and material 'for covering the writing-books as now sold in the'stores. The cover may have printed directions, and be ornamented in the usual manner, as shown at F, figs. l and 2.

These blotters may be fastened to the edges of the cover by means of gum or paste, or by the clasps E, iig. 2, or in any other suitable manner.

)Iy combined blotter and cover may be attached to' the book by a simple band of rubber, so as to be removed a-nd replaced at pleasure.

I find that teachers, pupils, and parents are very much pleased with my supplementary blotter covers, as they cultivate the habit of neatness in pupils, and enable the schools to exhibit a whole set of writing'- books perfectly neat and highly creditable to both pu'- pils and teachers, and very gratifying to the trustees, commit-tees, and other visitors of schools.

Having thus fully described my invention,

I claim the above described supplementary coverE, provided with a blotter C, for writing-books, as shown in fig. 8, the same being constructed andl used substantially as set forth.
