Specication of Letters Patent.
PatentedMay 14., 1912.
Application tiled November 13, 1911. Serial No. 660,008.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that. I, ALBERT IIEIRLE, a citizen ofl the United States, residing at Bunker Hill, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Silos; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionfof'the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe saine.
My invention 'relates to an improvement in silos, and particularly to weather strips interposed and connectingthe abutting ends of the, sheathing, the objectl being t0 so connect the boards constituting the sheathing, that t-he joints between the boards will be practically air and water tight, and thus prevent premature decay due to the lodgment of water between the boards.
lith these ends in View my invention consists inthe details of construction as will be rmore fully described and pointed out in.
the claim. I l
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View in perspective showing the meeting or abut-ting end s of two boards constituting a part of the sheathing or silo cover- Y sides and placed so that each will break joints with the next adjacent boards. This invention relates to means for sealing the joints between the abutting ends of the boards and it comprises a T-shaped sheet met-al strip 1. seated in grooves 2 in the abutting ends of the boards 3. The grooves 2 vare located about midway the thickness of the boards, and extend throughout their Width and are adapted to snugly receive the opposite edges of the vertical member 4 of the strip 1, the horizont-al member 5 of the strip resting between and `separating the ends of the boards, and turned down at its outer edge, as at 6, so as to cover and protect the upper edge of the'lower board and shed the water falling thereon. Any water passing back into the joint over the top ot' the strip.
the horizontal section 5 of the strip, will be blocked by the vert-ical section 4. The parts are however designed to lit so snugly that not only water, but air will be prevented from passing beyond the verticalsection ot' The strip 1 is preferably made of sheet metal folded as shown, so that the vertical section will be of double thickness and the horizontal section of a single thickness of metal. The vertical sectionextends throughout the width of the board ineluding the tongue 7, while thehorizontal section is as long as the board is wide minus the tongue, and is groove/i. at its edge as at 8 adjacent'the grooves i1: 'its boards so as to` receive and accommodate the tongue on vthe next adjacent board. These strips constructed as described. not' only connect and secure the abutting ends of the boards, but when appliedto all the joints, render the silo practically water and air tight.
It is evident that many slight changes might-be resorted to in the relative arrangement of parts shown and described with-` out departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to confine myself to the exact constructionv and arrangement of parts shown and described, but
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is
The combination with tongue and grooyed boards placed end to end and grooved at their abutting ends, of a metal strip or member resting within t-he grooves in the ends of both boards and extending from the outer edges of the tongues at one side int-o the grooves at the other side so as to enter the tongues of the next adjacent board, and a second metal member projecting horizon tally outwardly between the ends of th( boards to the front thereof and turned dOwr over the outer face of the `lower` board so as to form a water shed, t-he said second meinber being of slightly less length than sai( first mentioned member.
In testimony whereof, I havesigned thiv specification in the presence of two subscrib ing witnesses.
ALBERT KEIRLE.
