RAIL.
Application filed September 6,1913.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 788,469.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, J oHNCoReIA'r, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at,
which is liable to expand considerably under varyingtemperatures.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rail connection of this character which is simple of construction; and application, comparatively inexpensive, and thoroughly practical and efficient.
In the accompanying drawings which supplement this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation view of a rail joint; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of a rail illustrating the crossshaped tongue; and Fig. 3 is an. end view of the adjacent rail end illustrating the cross-shaped recess.
In these drawings in which similar reference characters correspond with similar parts throughout the several views, I have illustrated my invention as applied to the meeting ends of two railway rails, the end of one rail being generally designated by the numeral 5, the end of the otherrail being designated 6. The medial portions of these rails are the same as thatof an ordinary railway rail; the end portions, however, being substantially rectangular incross section. The end 5 of each railuis provided with a horizontal slot 7 which extends medially between the top and bottom entirely across the rail end, a vertical slot 8 extending from the bottom to the top of the rail and intersecting the slot 7 medially and at right angles. Theopposite end of the rail, or the contiguous end of the adjacent rail is provided .with a horizontal rib 9 which extends medially between the top and bottom entirely across the rail, a vertical rib 10 intersecting the rib 9 at right angles and extending from the top to the bottom of the rail. It will be seen that these two ribs 9 and 10 combine to form a cross, and
the arms are of such dimensions as to snugly fit into the intersecting slots 7 and 8, which combine to form a cross-shaped recess. It
is also to be observed that the outer faces of the ribs 9 and 10 are flat and flush one with the other, while the side walls of each of such ribs 9 and 10 are disposed in parallelism.
It is obvious that when the rails are fitted together, that the cross-shaped boss or tongue extends into the cross-shaped recess, the rail ends are positively secured against relative lateral movement, either vertically or horizontally; but they are free to move longitudinally relative to one another, so as to compensate for expansion and contract1on.
From the foregoing it is obvious that I have provided a rail connection which is fully capable of attaining the desired objects, as specified in the foregoing, in a portions of the parts without departing from the scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claim.
What I claim is In a rail joint, the combination of a rail having the web at an end portion increased in thickness substantially the width of the.
head of such rail, the end face of the rail thus afforded being provided with a vertically disposed tongue at substantially the transverse center thereof extended along,
the entire height of the rail, the end face of such tongue being fiat and the side walls thereof being disposed in parallelism, and
a horizontally disposed tongue intersecting.
the vertical tongue and disposed at substantially the center of height of the rail, the.
