To all 'whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, LrNwooD G. WitrrNEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifold Sales-Books, of which the following is a specification.

The inventionl relates to improvements in manifold sales-books for use in hotels, stores, and the like; and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described, and particularly pointed o-ut in the claims.

The object of the invention is to produce a novel manifold check-book Capable of convenient and efficient use and adapted in the preferred form of the book to permit the repeated use of the original checks, wit-hout the detachment of the latter, from time to time as may be required in connection with the duplicate checks to be issued, it being possible with the book of my invention to issue any number of the duplicate checks from one original check without the latter interfering with the use of the other original checks in connection with the pad of slips for the duplicate checks.

In its preferred form the book of my invention comprises a cover having three about e ,ual foldable sections one of which may be olded in between the other two sections and which upon its upper face when thus folded carries a pad of checks or slips to be issued as duplicates, and means near the adjoining ends of said two sections to receive and hold a series of independent original checks and allow said checks to have a hinged movement toward and from the pad of duplicate slips and also to be turned below and from below the cover section carrying said pad when desired, so that said original checks may be withdrawn from below said pad for use, and after having been wholly or partly used may be turned over upon the top section of the cover out of the way or returned `below said pad and afterward withdrawn therefrom for re peated use when desired without any of the original checks being detached from the means securing them.

The book permits the set of original checks to be initially located either upon the top cover section or the middle section, as may be preferred.

The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Flgure 1 is a top view, partly in perspective, of an open book embodying my invention, one of the original cheeks being shown as having` been turned upon the pad of duplicate checks and written upon, and the upper section of the cover and the original checks thereon being shown as inclining upwardly, thereby throwing them into perspective, in lieu of lying flat, for want of space on the sheet; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of same on the dotted line 2-2 of Fig. 1, the upper section of the cover and the original cheeks thereon being shown as partly broken away; and in Fig. 2 I illustrate by dotted lines that the cover section carrying the pad of turned outwardly from the middle section of the cover; Fig. 3 is a detached plan view of a metal plate to be concealed in the fabric of the cover and carrying rings upon which the Original checks are strung and may have a hinged movement either toward the upper end or middle section of the cover, said rings having swiveled sections which may be swung outwardly, as indicated by dotted lines, to admit said checks to the rings; Fig. 4 is an enlarged section of same and the adjoining portion of the cover on the dotted linea-41 of Fig. 3;Figs.5,6,7and S illustrate four duplicate checks which are issued at different times with the use of the one original check shown in position on the pad in Fig. l, the purpose of the invention being to thus enable the issuance of duplicate checks from time to time as required without detaching the original check and without in the meantime interfering with the use of other original checks and the issuance of other duplicate checks therefrom. and Fig. 9 is a side elevation of the book folded, some of the original checks being shown as below the cover-section carrying the pad of duplicate slips and others as being upon said pad.

In the drawings 10, 11 and 12 respectively denote the sections of the cover, these sections being hinged in the usual manner of book-covers so that they may be independently moved 12 folded upon the middle section 11, as shown in Fig. 9. folded inwardly, is detachably secured, at its left hand edge, a pad of duplicate checkslips 13 by any suitable means engaging the stub of said pad but preferably by means of the known metal frame 14 which is not vseparately claimed herein and is shown and described in detail in Letters-Patent No. 754,361 granted March 8, 1904 to L. G. Thit'ney for manifold sales book. Upon the top of the pad 13 is a carbon or transfer sheet 15 and at about the middle of said pad is another carbon or transfer sheet 16 to be used after the slips of the pad above it have been issued, as usual.

In the fabric of the cover at the adjoining portions of the sections 11, 12 is embedded a folded tin plate 36 (Figs. 2, 3, 4) to which are secured by means of a transverse pin 17 the rings 1S, which are rigidly held against swiveling or twisting action by the walls of slots 2O cut in said plate to receive their lower edges. The rings 18 have swiveled sections 21 which may be turned laterally, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, to open said rings for the reception of the original checks 22, after which said sections will be turned to closed position at which they pass or snap into locking engagement with the body of the rings. The original checks 22 are all independent of one another and will be numbered in consecutive order, the check shown in Fig. 1 on the pad bearing check number 24,7 and said checks will be suitably ruled and, when used in hotels, will preferably bear the word I/Vaiter, in the space following which the waiter using the book will insert his number, as 19. The duplicate check-slips are wider than the original checks 22, and at their right hand edge where they project beyond the side edge of the original check will be provided spaces within which the waiter upon filling out the original check (amd at the same time making the carbon duplicate) will insert his number as 19 and the number of the original check (as 24 he is using. The carbon sheets 15, 16 extend only to the outer or right hand edge of the original checks.

In the employment of the book the set of original checks 22 may be housed between the cover- sections 10, 11 or upon the cover section 12, as may be preferred. It may be considered that for convenience the set of original checks were strung upon the rings 18 for storage beneath the section 10, said checks then facing upwardly. In using the book, t-he waiter would then turn up the section 10 and swing out the top check 22, and then close the section 10 and fold said rst check down upon the pad 13, writing the order upon said check and issuing the dupli- The original first check maythen be thrown over upon the section 12 for future use, and the waiter may as orders are given by other guests withdraw, as before, additional original checks from below the section 10 and fold them down upon the pad 13 and write upon them, issuing the duplicates as before and throwing the original checks over upon those already on the cover-section 12, as de# noted in Fig. 2. At any time it may be desired to again use any check on the coversection 12, all the checks above it will be folded below the section 10, said section 10 being lifted for that purpose, and said check will be folded upon the pad 13 to receive the additional matter and provide for the issuance of the duplicate, after which said check will be again turned over upon the cover-section 12. It is obvious wit-hout extended description that by the ability to swing the original checks back and forth upon the cover sections 11, 12, due to the pad section 10 being hinged, any one of the ori ginal checks may be placed upon the pad 13 at any time and as frequently as desired. In Fig. 1 I illustrate check 24 on the pad 13, and in Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 I show four duplicates as having been issued atvarious times as orders were given with the use of said check, these figures illustrating the utility of the invention. If desired the set of original checks 22 may be initially stored upon the cover-section 12 and as used turned below the pad-section 10.

The present invention comprises improvements upon the book of my aforesaid Letters-Patent 754,361, in that among other things, I now dispense with the lateral swiveling of the original checks and avoid the inconveniences due to said checks being positively held at one point only. The present book is also less complex and less expensive of manufacture than the book of said patent.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent, is z- 1. A manifold sales-book comprising a cover having three about equal sections 10, 11, 12, in line with each other, the section 11 being the middle one, and said sections being hinged together, a pad of duplicate check-slips secured at its left hand edge upon kthat face of said section 10 which is uppermost when said section is folded between the sections 11, 12, a set of original checks, and means freely hinging at one end said set of original checks to/said cover adjacent to the top edge of said pad, when the section 10 is in folded position, and adjacent to the hinged adjoining ends of said sections 11, 12, whereby said original checks may be turned and lie fiat upon either the sections 11 or l2 and be independently placed upon said pad of duplicate check-slips; substantially as set forth.

2. A manifold sales-book comprising a cover having three about equal sections 10, l1, l2, in line with each other, the section 11 being the middle one, and said sections being hinoed together, a pad of duplicate check-slips secured at its left hand edge upon that face of said section 10 which is uppermost when said section is folded between the sections ll, l2, a set of original checks, and rings freely hinging at one end saidset of original checks to said cover adjacent to the top edge of said pad, when the section l0 is in folded position, and adjacent to the hinged adjoining ends of said sections 1l, 12, whereby said original checks may be turned and lie flat upon either the sections l1 or 12 and be independently placed upon said pad of duplicate check-slips; substantially as set forth.

3. A manifold sales book comprising three cover portions arranged in successive order in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the cover and hinged together along their adjacent ends, a pad of duplicate checks carried on the back of the lower cover port-ion and secured thereto along the left hand edge thereof, a pad of original checks carried on the face of the intermediate cover portion and means for securing left hand edge thereof, a pad of original checks carried on the face of the intermediate cover portion and means for securing such pad upon the cover and for permitting the separate checks to be swung clear back r throughout their entire lengths and made to lie without bending upon the cover, such means including a removable ring having hinged portions adapted to be opened to permit the removal or replacement of the separate original checks.
