RAIL-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7,1912.
Application filed October 14, 1911. Serial No. 654,581.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoJs Hvizoos, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Morrisdale Mines, in the county of Clean field and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing This invention relates to rail fasteners, and the primary object of my invention is the provision of simple and effective means for clamping a rail upon a tie without the use of spikes.
Another object of this invention is to provide a rail fastener than can be easily and quickly placed in position for preventing vertical and lateral displacement of a rail relatively to a tie.
A further object of this invention is to provide a rail fastener that is durable, easy to install and applicable to wood or metallic ties.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rail fastener in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is'a front elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the fasteners.
A fastener in accordance with this invention comprises a curved arm 1 having the lower end thereof provided with an aper ture 2 and'the upper end thereof reduced and provided with an aperture 3. In reducing the upper end of the arm 1 a shoulder 1 is formed, the formation of said shoulder providing a lip 5. The arm 1, intermediate the ends thereof, is apertured, as at 6 and the upper reduced end of said arm is provided with an angularly disposed extension 7 having a head 8. The angularly disposed extension is offset relatively to the upper end of the arm 1, whereby said extension can be placed upon the base flange 9 of a rail 10, with the arm 1 extending downwardly at the side of a tie 11 employed for supporting the rail 10. arms upon each side are pivotally connected by links 12, the ends of said links being held in engagement with the arms 1 by rivets or other fastening means 13. The lips 5 of the arms 1 are adapted to engage the base flanges 9 of the rail 10, while the heads 8 of the extension 7 brace the web .1-1 of said The upper ends of the arms are connected by a tie rod 15 that extends through the apertures 3, said tie rod having loopshaped heads 16 and nuts 17. The lower apertured end of the arms 1 are connected by similar tie rods 18 and nuts 19, said tie rods extending through openings 20 provided therefor in the tie 11. By removing the tie rods 18, the upper ends of the arms 1 can be swung outwardly to release the rail 10, and when it is desired to disassemble the fasteners, the tie rods 18 can be removed.
From the foregoing it will be observed that the extensions 7 hold the base flanges of the rail at four differentpoints, and as the fasteners are firmly anchored relatively to the tie, it is practically impossible for, the fasteners to become displaced.
The fasteners are made of light and durable metal and can be rapidly assembled.
What I claim is In a rail fastener, the combination with a tie, and a rail mounted thereon, of sets of curved arms arranged at the sides of said tie, links having the ends thereof pivotally connected to the arms of each set, lips carried by the upper ends of said arms and engaging the base flanges of said rail, angular extensions formed integral with the upper ends of said arms and extending over the base flanges of said rail and bracing the Web thereof, tie rods connecting the upper ends of one set of arms with the upper ends of the other set of arms, and tie rods extending through said tie and connecting the lower ends of one set of arms to the lower ends of the other set of arms.
