IMPROV'IEIMIEHST IN REVERSIBLE BUTT-HING-ES.

The Schedule referred to these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

I, D. FRANK- HALE, of Ohicopee, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have made and invented ai new und useful Improvement in Reversible Butt-Hinges, of which the following is n specification, reference being had to the accompanying dra-wings making n. peut of the seme, wherein- Figure l is a side elevation of a hinge embodying my invention;

Figure 2, an end elevation f the same;

Figure 3, n side elevation, showingthe borrel-cap removed; and

Figure 4, an end elevation of the seme.

My invention consists in connecting the upper or pmjecting end of pintle d with leaf e, the object thereof being to strengthen the hinge and prevent the pin tie being sprung or twisted from its proper position by any sudden strain or jor, and this I do by meeins et' cap u., projection b, studv slot c, and obviously the same result would be attained by means of' a. hole.

The pintle d is made fest in that part of the barrel formed on lent" e, and of such length as to project upward nearly or quite to the top of such leaves. In the barrel edge of len-fl e, I form n iloyetnil slot, c. I provide what I term the barrel-cup a', hcingreally o .portion of' the barrel, on the side of which cap is formed a dovetuil projection, b. Projection b slides into slot c, while pintle d enters a. central hole in cap a, thus giving to ztloose-joint reversible hinge the appearance, und to a considerable degree the strength, of a. tight-joint hinge.

I am aware thatzt reversible hinge, with a. barrelcap similar to that herein described, has heretofore been made, and Ido not claim ltheinvention of such cap, but limit myself' to the connection ofthe leaf und pintle, inthe manner specified.
