FOLDABLE HOLDER FOR WRITING-PADS.

Referring to the drawing it will be seen that the improved holder or cover comprises a plurality of sections connected in such manner that they may be folded one over another and that adjacent sections will abut when in open position.

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated there are three similar sections 1, 2, 3, which may be formed of any suitable material, such as pasteboard, said sections being protected at their side edges by sheaths 4:, of metal or other suitable material, secured in position by rivets or by being indented into the body of the section. The outer surfaces of the several sections and said protecting strips may be ornamented as desired to give the article an attractive appearance and the dimensions of each section and the number of such sections will be varied according to the size of pad to be employed therewith.

The end sections 1, 3, are connected by a flexible backing sheet 5 of leather or similar material which extends over said sections and the intermediate section beneath the pad or series of sheets of paper 6. This backing sheet, which is shown as connected with the end sections by the end sheaths or protecting strips 7, provides a continuous smooth surface beneath the writing pad covering the lines of separation between the several sections of the back. Said pad 6 is secured to the back or cover by means of a pair of resilient clamps 8, 9, which may be formed integral with the end protection strip 7 of the section 3 if such strip is of metal. As shown said clamps are connected by a bar or rod 10 by means of which they can be readily moved away from the back sufiiciently far to permit the pad 6 to be withdrawn and replaced by a new one. The construction of said clamps is such that the pad will be held securely in position even though the thickness thereof is considerably reduced by the withdrawal of sheets after use. The end and intermediate sections are connected by links 11, 12 and pivot pins or studs which latter are shown as connected with the protect-ing sheaths 4. The links l1, 12 are of such length and their pivotal connection with the sections so arranged that when the sections are in open position, or extended for use, the adjacent sections will abut; and means are provided for rigidly holding the sections in such open position. One form of connection for retaining the sections in said open position comprises a pair of sliding clips 13, 14 cooperating with each hinge joint. As shown, said clips are of such length that they can be supported entirely by one of the sections or can be moved to connect two adjacent sections. In Fig. 1 the clips 13 are shown in posit-ion to rigidly connect the sections while the other clips 14 are in the position occupied when the pad and holder are to be folded. Said clips may be permanently connected with the holder, as by having a slight rib formed on an inner surface engaging corresponding grooves provided in the sur faces of the sheaths e on which they bear as shown in Fig. 3. A pair of guides 15 may be provided for engaging opposite edges of the pad 6, said guides being shown as carried by a bar or plate extending between the flexible backing sheet and the body of the holder. Said guide plate is held in position by the sheet 5 and may be moved longitudinally thereof to adapt it for usewith pads of different lengths.

To retain the pad and holder in folded position means are provided for connecting the sections 1, 2. A very simple but effective latch or connecting device for this purpose is illustrated, it consisting of a wire rod 16 bent to provide two parallel members separated by a member of such length as to extend from the section 1 across the edges of sections 3, 2, when the parts are folded. One ofsaid parallel members is fitted in a socket formed in the section 1, being adapted to move longitudinally and also to rotate therein. When it is desired to unfold the pad from the position shown in Figs. 4 and 5, said latch rod 16 is drawn outwardly to withdraw it from engagement with the section 2. The parts can then be turned into the open position represented in Fig. 1 and held rigid by the clips 13, 141. The latch 16 can be turned on its permanent connection with the section 1 as an axis into position to bring the other parallel member thereof into alinement with a second socket in the section 1 and then moved inwardly, or into the position shown in Fig. 1.

The manner of using and the advantages of the improved holder or cover will be readily understood and appreciated from the foregoing description in connection with the drawing. It will be understood that in order to more readily disclose the construction the proportions of some of the parts are exaggerated in the drawing.

Having thus described the invent-ion what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters-Patent is,

1. The herein described holder for a writing pad comprising a plurality of sections connected by means adapting them to fold into substantial parallelism and out of con tact with each other, the edges of adjacent sections abutting one another when in open position and means for; rigidly connecting the sections when in open position.

2. The herein described holder for a writing pad comprising a plurality of sections, and links pivotally connected at their ends with adjacent sections whereby said sections may be folded into substantial parallelism out of contact with each other and will abut one another when in open position.

3. The herein described holder for a writ ing pad comprising a plurality of sections, links pivotally connected at their ends with adjacent sections whereby said sections may be folded into substantial parallelism out of contact with each other and will abut one another when in open position, and means for rigidly connecting the sections when in open position.

4. The herein described holder for a writing pad comprising a plurality of sections connected to fold one over another, the edges of adjacent sections abutting one another when in open position, and a flexible backing sheet attached to the end sections, and extending across the intermediate sections, said sheet being disconnected from each section adjacent the edge thereof that abuts on another section when in open position.

5. The herein described holder for a writing pad comprising a plurality of sections connected to fold one over another, the

6. The herein described holder for a writing pad comprising a plurality of plate-like sections, means connecting said sections to cause the edges of adjacent sections to abut one another in open position and permit the sections to fold into substantial parallelism out of contact one with another, and a flexible sheet attached to the end sections and extending across the intermediate sections, said sheet being disconnected from each section adjacent the edge thereof that abuts on another section when in open position.

7. The herein described holder for a writing pad comprising a plurality of sections, means connecting said sections to permit them to fold one over another and cause the edges of adjacent sections to abut one another when in open position, and means for rigidly connecting the sections in open position comprising a plurality of clips each connected with one section by means preventing lateral movement and adapted to be moved longitudinally to engage the adjacent section.

8. The herein described holder for a writing pad comprising a plurality of sections, means connecting said sections to permit them to fold one over another and cause the edges of adjacent sections to abut one another when in open position, and means for rigidly connecting the sections in open position comprising a plurality of clips each embracing a side edge of one section and having means engaging a groove in the section to prevent lateral movement, said clips being movable longitudinally to engage the adjacent section.

9. The herein described holder for a writing pad comprising a plurality of sections, means connecting said sections and permitting them to fold one over another and cause the edges of adjacent sections to abut one another when in open position, clamps attached to an end section of the back and adapted to engage a writing pad to secure it to the back, and a bar extending transversely of the back and provided at its ends with means to engage the side edges of said pad.

10.
