To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, FRED T. LOFTIN and GEORGE W7. Evnnnr'r, of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain useful Inserted-Leaf Holder for Books and the Like; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The object of this invention is to provide practical and convenient means for holding inserted sheets or leaves in connection with magazines and books in such manner that they may be readily removed from one magazine or book and arranged in connection with another magazine or book. The chief use of such invention is for advertising purposes, arranging a number of sheets containing advertising matter in such manner that it can be applied to magazines from month to month or when and in any man` ner desired. These sheets may be inserted between the leaves of a magazine or book or in the cover. Therefore, the invention has nothing in common with a temporary binder the only function of which is to provide a cover. Here the advertising sheets are held by the cover or appliance, constituting the invention so that the appliance with the sheets thereon may be changed from one magazine to another, or one magazine taken out and another put in place as desired. In this way a device ofthe kind equipped with one set of advertising sheets can be used for a wholeyear with periodicals and changed from day to day, week to week and month to month as the peridicals issue.

The nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a section therethrough on the line 2 2 and showing the magazine in place. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of Fig. 1 showing the magazine in place. Fig. 4 is an elevation of a part of the other end of thedevice. Fig. 5 is a section through Fig. 1 on the line 5 5 with the magazine in place. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the device with the cover omitted and showing one of the leaf holders in place and an inserted leaf centrally broken away. Fig. 7 is the same showing another leaf holding device. Fig. 8 is a section through the portion of the device shown in Fig. 6, on the line S-8 thereof. Fig. 9 is a section on the line 9--9 of Fig. 6 through the device. Fig. 10 is a detail on a larger scale showing the manner of holding the sheet appearing in Fig. 6. Fig. 16 is a plan view of the right hand end of the back and locking means attached, as shown in Fig. 13, with the loop plate omitted. Fig. 17 is an elevation of the partition plate in the locking means and a vertical section through the top thereof.

A rigid back is provided and side covers 11 are connected therewith. These side covers are each composed of two pieces of cardboard, or any material suitable for a book cover, placed together in parallel order, and bound at the three outer edges,

leaving the lower edge of cardbo-ard forming the inner half of back unbound to admit of the insertion of a sheet between the outer and inner layers constituting-'the back. The outer layers of the covers are centrally out out at 12 so as to make an opening for the disclosure of the cent-ral portion of inserted sheet 13, while the inner layer of the cover affords a support and reinforcement for the isheet thus inserted. Both sides of thecover are arranged in the same manner so that a sheet of advertising can be inserted and changed as often as desired.

To the back 10 at one end a narrow plate 20 is secured, as indicated in Figs. t and 6, with an inwardly extending ring-like plate 21 -to receive Vinserted leaf-

23, 22 and v241. These leaf-holding bars are provided with holes adapted to slip over the staple-head 21, which holes are preferably round and a gap 25 is provided for their insert-ion or removal. When in place these leaf holders are pivoted on said staple-head 21 and are long enough to extend through the magazine Ior book 26 and project beyond the other end thereof. rlhe free ends of the leaf-holding bars are provided with notches 27 adapt-ed to be engaged by a looped plate 28 which holds and locks said bars in the maffazine or book, as shown. The locking means for holding said plate 28 appears in Figs. 6 and 7. The looped plate 2S passes through a frame 8O which is secured to the back 10. rlhe end of said looped plate 2S which passes through the frame 30 has shoulders 3l in the inner portion thereof so as to reduce the width of the eX treme end of the opening in said looped plate. The frame 30 has a partition plate 32, the inner edge of which is reduced as shown in Fig. 17 and overlapped by a spring 83 which lies on the outside of said plate, so that there are two compartments in said frame, one on each side of the partition plate 32, and the width of the outer end of said frame over the inner compartment is greater than that portion over the outer compartment. Thus the width of the outer end of the frame over the inner compartment is the same as the width of the main portion of the frame 30, see Fig. 3, while the width of the inner portion of said frame over the outer compartment is reduced, as shown at 130 in Fig. 3. The width of the former portion is such as to engage the shoulders 31 and prevent the out-ward movement of the loop 30 when it is caught over the holding bars so that when the mechanism is in place said holding bars cannot escape from said loop 30 and thus the device will be locked, as shown in Figs. 3 and 7.

To unlock the device and release the free ends of the holding bars 22, 23 and 24, the plate 2S is pushed down into the frame 30 beyond the partition plate and then moved outwardly against the spring 33 to the compartment outside the partition plate to tie position shown in Fig. 6, and then the plate 28 is moved in a direction away from the back l0, so thatthe shoulders in the plate 10 will pass the reduced port-ion 130 of the frame 30. This causes the looped plate 2S to extend far enough away from the back 10 to enable one to disengage it from the holding bars 22, 23 and 24 and then said bars and the inserted leaves held by them can be separated from the magazine and the device applied to another magazine and the looped plate 28 caught over the ends of the holding bars 22, 23 and 24, and then the looped plate 28 is returned from the outer to the inner compartment where it will be held down to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 7. With the magazine in place the holding bars will be locked from escape.

The device preferably contains three styles of holding bars 22. 23 and 24 for different kinds of inserted leaves, and since those leaves may come in diderent forms, single or double, or long or short, and it may be desired to insert all forms in one magazine, a variety of holding bars in one device is preferable. rlhe holding bars 22 are provided with longitudinal slots 34 for the insertion of a double leaf or two leaves in one sheet folded midway, as shown in Fig. 11. Of course, this sheet must be short enough to go into the slot. A single leaf may be inserted with this holding bar, but the inner edge would have to be extended so as to pass through the slot and fold up for some distance, but preferably only the double sheets will be held by this bar. The bars 23 are provided near each end with notches 37 and are for thc attachment of single leaves or sheets 3S in the manner shown in Figs. 6 and l0. These single sheets arc secured by pasters 40, which are looped loosely about the bar 23 near eachend and secured to the inserted leaf. Thus affording an improvement over inventions of similar character in the manner of a free and natural movement in turning the pages or opening and closing the magazine or book thus engaged, by the bars which are pivotally mounted upon a ring-like plate 2l and locked at free ends at loop plate 28. The notches 37 prevent the longitudinal movement thereof. rl`hus it is observed that with this device the inserted sheets are secured to the device rather permanently so that they can be used over and over again with successive issues of periodicals or with successive books. But since some sheets may be too long to be conveniently located and held with the slotted bars 22 or notched bars 23, each device is preferably provided with the plain bar 24 about which double leaves may be inserted, or single leaves may be applied thereto by the pasters 40.

Vile claim as our invention:

l. A device for holding inserted leaves in connection with magazines, books and the like which includes a back adapted to be placed adjacent the back of the magazine, book and the like, means connected with said back adapted to extend between the leaves of the magazine, book and the like, and inserted leaves secured to said means.

2. A device for holdingI inserted leaves in connection with magazines, books and the like including a back adapted to be placed adjacent the back of the magazine, book and the like, a longitudinally slotted bar through which a leaf may be inserted and held in the magazine, book and the like and pivotally connected at one end of said back` and means for releasably securing the outer end of said bar to said back.

3. A device for holding inserted leaves in connection with magazines, books and the like, a back adapted to be placed adjacent the back of the magazine, book and the like, a bar pivotally connected at one end with said back and provided with a pair of stop notches between the ends thereof for limiting the longitudinal movement of the leaf which is secured thereto, and means for releasably securing the other end to said back.

4. A device for holding inserted leaves in connection with magazines, books and the like including a back adapted to be placed adjacent the back of the magazine, book and the like, a bar pivotally connected at one end to said back, an inserted leaf, means secured to said leaf that is looped about said bar for holding the leaf thereon, and means for releasably securing the other end of said bar to said back.

5. A device for holding inserted leaves in connection with magazines, books and the like including a back adapted to be placed adjacent the back of the magazine, book and the like, inserted leaf-holding bars pivotally connected at one end to said back and adapted to extend between the leaves of the magazine, book and the like and provided with notches in their free ends, a looped plate adapted to engage the notched ends of said bars, and means secured to said back for holding the inner portion of said looped plate from outward movement so that said bars will be locked in position when applied to a magazine, book and the like.

6. A device for holding inserted leaves in i connection with magazines, books and the like including a back adapted to be placed adjacent the back of the magazine, book and the like, inserted leaf-holding bars pivotally connected at one end to said back and adapted to extend between the leaves of the magazine, b-ook and the like and provided with notches in their free ends, a looped plate adapted to engage the notches of said bars and having shoulders in the inner portion thereof so as to vary the width of said opening therein, a frame secured to said back through which said looped plate passes and having two compartments separated by a spring, and a portion of said frame over each compartment varying in width to agree with the variations in the width of the opening through said looped plate whereby said looped plate will be held inwardly while in one compartment and will be permitted to move outwardly farther when changed to the other compartment.
