CUSPIDOR.
To all whom it may cmwcrn Be it known that I, ANTONY SZABADOS, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at New Michel, in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to cuspidors, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a cuspidor with novel means whereby the interior of the cuspidor can be thoroughly cleansed and maintained in a sanitary condition; second, to furnish a cuspidor with a novel spring actuated check-valve for closing the cuspidor whereby the contents thereof will not be spilled when the cuspidor is accidentally tilted or upset, and third, to provide a cuspidor that can be advantageously used in hotels, theaters and other public places where pedestrians and others are liable to upset cuspidors.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of'parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of th cuspidor. partly broken away and partly in section. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the cuspidor in a tilted or upset position, showing the checkvalve thereof closed. Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the cuspidor, showing the inclined platforms thereof in an elevated position, and Fig. 5" is an enlarged horizontal sectional view of a portion of the cuspidor, showing one of the valves thereof.
The reference numeral 1 denotes substantially a spherical receptacle 1 having a flat bottom 2 provided with a central opening 3. Surrounding the opening 3 within the receptacle 1 is a vertical tube 4 having the upper end thereof enlarged to form a cylindrical casing 5, and the top of this casing has a central opening 6.
7 denotes a plunger movably mounted in the tube 4 and extending into the casing 5.

said uprights being arranged in parallelism and supporting a conical-shaped valve 13, the purpose of which will presently appear.
The racks 9 mesh with pinions 10 revolubly mounted in the casing 5, said pinions meshing with a double rack 11 carried by a valve stem 12 movably mounted in the hollow plunger 7 and between the uprights 10*, said valve stem extending through the valve 13 and having the upper end thereof provided with a conical-shaped valve or deflector 59.
M denotes lugs carried by the racks 9 and connected to said lugs is the upper convolution 15 of a coiled compression spring 16, said spring having the lower convolution thereof connected to the lower end of the casing 5. The tension of the spring 16 is suflicient to move the racks 9, when the lower end of the plunger 7 is released, by the upset-ting or tilting of the cuspidor. hen the plunger 7 is released the valve stem 12 is lowered through the medium of the racks 9 and 11 and the pinions 10.
18 denotes an exteriorly threaded neck carried by the upper edges of the receptacle 1 and detachably mounted upon said neck is an interiorly screw threaded collar 19.
20 denotes a cylindrical shell having the lower edges thereof bent inwardly or reamed, as at 21, to rest upon the breast of the receptacle 1. The shell 20 intermediate the upper and lower edges thereof is provided with an annular inclined partition 22 having a central opening 23. Mounted in the opening 23 is a vertical sleeve 24 and connected to said sleeve are a plurality of radially disposed inclined vertical partitions 25 extending from said sleeve to the shell 20. The sleeve 24: has a plurality of openings 26 establishing communication between said sleeve and the'compartments 27 formed by the vertical partitions 25.
28 denotes movable platforms arranged in the compartments 27 and adapted to normally rest upon the annular partition 22. Engaging the under side of each platform is the upper convolution of a compression spring 29, said spring having the lower convolution thereof resting upon inwardly pro leased and the racks 9 are elevated to close jecting lugs 30 carried by a vertical tubular housing 31 mounted upon the collar 19.
32 denotes a depending latch carried by each of the plat-forms 28, said latch extending through the compression spring 29 and having the lower end thereof normally engaged by a keeper The keeper 38 is carried by a rod movably mounted in the lower end of the housing 31. The inner end of the rod 34: has a head 35 engaging a guide 36 within said housing, the head limiting the outward movement of the rod 34. The keeper of said rod is normally retain-ed in engagemt-znt with the latch 32 by the coiled retractile spring 36 encircling said rod, said spring having one convolution connected to the rod. and the other convolution to a guide 88, carried by said housing. The outer end of the rod 3% has a head 39 and the shell 20 opposite each head is provided with an opening 40, whereby the finger or a suitable in strument can be inserted in the shell to press the head 89, move the rod 34 and the keeper and thereby release the latch 32, allowing the spring 29 to elevate the platforms 28.
4.1 denotes a locking member pivotally connected to a depending lug 42, carried by the platform 28, said lug protruding into an opening 43 provided therefor in the partition 22. The lower end of the member 11 has a right angular extension 44: adapted to engage in an opening 15 provided therefor in the shell 20. The locking member 41 must be released or moved out of engagement with the shell 20 before the platform 28 can be elevated by pushinginwardly upon the rod 34.
16 denotes a tubular hollow rim carried by the upper edge of the shell 20 and this rim is provided with a plurality of radially disposed partitions 17, the partitions being arranged in vertical alinement with the partitions 25, thereby dividing the rim 46 into a plurality of receptacles 48 adapted to contain water. Water is admitted to the receptacles 48 through openings 19 provided therefor in the rim 16, said openings being normally closed by plugs 50.
51 denotes valve bodies formed integral with the rim 46 within each of the receptacles 48, each valve body having a valve seat 52 for a valve plug 53. The valve plug 58 is rotat-ably mounted in the valve body and is provided with an angular port 5 1 adapted to establish communication between ports 55 and 56 in said valve body, these ports allowing the water within the receptacle 18 to pass into the compartments 27 below said receptacle. The outer ends of the valve plugs 53 have handles 57 whereby the valve plugs can be easily rotated.
When the euspidor is tilted or upset, the tension of the compression spring 16 is rethe valve 13 by placing said valve in engagement with the lower end of the sleeve 24. An upward movement of the racks 9 revolves the pinion 10 and lowers the valve stem 12, said stem seating the valve 59 upon the end of the sleeve 24.
To clean the platforms 28 of any matter that may adhere to said platforms, the locking members 41 are pushed inwardly and then the fingers inserted in the openings 40 to press the rods 34. The keepers 33 release the catches 32 and the springs 29 elevate the platforms between the partitions 25. The platforms are raised to the upper edge of the sleeve 21, whereby pieces of cigars and other matter too large to pass through the openings 26 will pass through the upper edges of the sleeve. By rotating the valve plugs 53 the contents of the receptacles 48 can flow upon the platforms 28 and wash the matter into the receptacle 1.
The hand can be inserted between the partitions 25 when it is desired to restore the platforms to their normal position. The platforms can be independently operated, and when the euspidor is tilted or upset the platform elevating means is not interfered with by the contents of the receptacle 1.
VVhat- I claim is 1. A euspidor comprising a receptacle, a shell supported by said receptacle, an in clined annular partition arranged in said shell and having an opening formed therein, radially disposed vertical partitions arranged upon said annular partition and pro viding a plurality of compartments, a plat form arranged in each compartment, means arranged in said shell and adapted when released to elevate said platforms, and an annular hollow rim carried by said shell and adapted to supply water to said platforms for cleansing said platforms.
2. A euspidor comprising a receptacle, a shell supported by said receptacle, an inclined annular partition arranged in said shell and having an opening formed therein, radially disposed vertical partitions arranged upon said annular partition and pro viding a plurality of compartments, a platform arranged in each compartment, means arranged in said shell and adapted when released to elevate said platforms, an annular hollow rim carried by said shell and adapted to supply water to said platforms for cleansing said platforms, and valves arranged in said rim and adapted to control the supply of water to said platforms.

A euspidor comprising a receptacle, a shell supported by said receptacle, an inclined annular partition arranged in said shell and having an opening formed therein, radially disposed vertical partitions arranged upon said annular partition and providing a plurality of compartments, a platform arranged in each compartment, means arranged in said shell and adapted when released to elevate said platforms, an annular hollow rim carried by said shell and adapt ed to supply water to said platforms for cleansing said platforms, valves arranged in said rim and adapted to control the supply of water to said platforms, and means including keepers and locking members adapted to normally retain said platforms upon said annular partition.
l. A cuspidor comprising a receptacle, a shell supported by said receptacle, an inclined annular partition arranged in said shell and having an opening formed therein, radially disposed vertical partitions arranged upon said annular partition and providing a plurality of compartments, a platform arranged in each compartment, means adapted to normally retain said platforms upon said annular partition, and means including a spring actuated valve arranged in said receptacle and adapted to close the opening of said partition.
