WINDOW-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern;
Be 1t known that I, FREDERICK Gr. MIoHEL,
a citizen of the United States, residing attoners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to window fastener and the object of my invention is to provide a fastener by which the lower sash of the window may be locked in a closed or partially raised position and the upper sash may also be locked in a closed or partially lowered position so that either sash of the window may be safely and securely looked while in a partially raised or lowered position as the case may be.
I obtain this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of my device secured to the top of the lower window sash. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, partly in section of my device secured to a window showing portions of the upper and lower sash. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the bolt. Fig. 4: is a side elevation of the bolt. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the look. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the lock. Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the plate on which the locking device is operated. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the same, partly in section. Fig. 9 is an end elevation of the same, partly in section.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the lower frame of a window sash.
B represents the upper frame of a window sash.
On the top of the lower window sash is fastened the plate C by the screws 0, 0 or in any suitable manner. The plate G is provided with lugs 0 0 making a pathway or slideway for the bolt D to move back and forth in as shown in Fig. 1.
D is a bolt adapted to have a limited motion back and forth on the plate G in the pathway formed by the lugs 0 c. The bolt D has a projection or end piece (Z by which 1t is operated. The central portion of the bolt D is flattened down and broadened out and is provided with a slot, as shown in Fig. 3. This broadened portion of the bolt D permits the bolt tooscillate backward and forward between the lugs 0 0 upon the plate C. The bolt D is also provided with the lug (Z to be used in connection with the lock E as hereinafter described.
E is the lock formed with one broad end to cover over the broadened portion of the bolt D and is pivoted over the bolt D to the plate C by the rivet F extending through the plate C and through the slot in the broadened portion of the bolt D. The lock E also has a lug or projection e as a handpiece to move the lock E. The lock E also has an elongated recess 011 the lower side adapted for the lug cl to operate in.
The plate C, as above stated, is securely attached to the top of the lower window sash adjacent to the frame of the window. The bolt D is mounted upon the plate C and slidably attached thereto by the rivet F which also holds the lock E over the bolt D as shown in Fig. 1. The plate C is so adjusted upon the top of the lower window sash that the inner end of the bolt D will come in contact with the adjoining side of the frame of the upper sash as shown in Fig. 1. As thus arranged and adjusted the bolt D may be oscillated backward and forward between the lugs 0 0 of the plate C so that the inner end of the bolt D may fit in holes in the adjacent frame of the upper sash, and the lug d on the bolt D enter the recess on the under side of the lock E. The bolt D is operated by the handle (Z and when drawn out so that the inner end of the bolt is free from the upper window sash the sash may be lowered as desired. Suitable holes are made in the frame so that the sash may be lowered as desired and the bolt D shot in so that the inner end of the bolt enters the holes and holds the sash in any desired position.
To look the lower window sash thenotched strip G is attached to the window frame and arranged and adjusted in such a way that the outer end of the lock E will enter in the notches g of the strip G as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In this way the lower window sash is locked in a closed or raised position. At the same time as the bolt D is pushed inwardly the lug d enters the recess in the under side of the lock E and holds the lock E in the notch g. WVhen it is desired to unlock the window so as to move the lower sash the bolt D is moved outwardly and this releases the lock E which is turned upon its pivot and moves the end of the lock E from the notch I and this releases the lower sash so it can be moved.
A window fastener constructed and adjusted as above described will hold the upper sash or the lower sash or both closed or in a partially open position so that although the windows are partially open they will still be securely locked and protected against any one from the out-side disturbing them. Thus windows may be safely left open a limited distance from the top and bottom during the night or when the occupants are absent from the house.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. A window fastener consisting of a plate attached to the upper side of the lower Window sash, a bolt having an elongated slot slidably pivoted upon said plate and adapted to operate in recesses in the upper window sash, and a lock pivoted to said plate over said bolt and adapted to operate in notches in the window frame. v
2. In a window fastener a plate attached to the upper side of the lower sash, a bolt having an elongated slot therein slidably mounted upon said plate, a lock pivoted to said plate over said bolt, a recess in the under surface of said lock, a lug upon the upper surface of said bolt adapted to operate in the recess in said lock, holes in the upper window sash adapted to receive the end of said bolt, a strip attached to the window frame having notches therein adapted to receive said lock, means for operating said bolt whereby said lug willenter the recess of said lock and hold it securely in said notches, substantially as described for the purposes set forth.
