ADVERTISING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 19, 1911.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HERBERT ATHERTON, inspector of newspaper distribution, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at 8 Braemar avenue, lVimbledon Park, S. in the county of Surrey, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a machine for exposing an advertisement at the will of the operator, suitable for fixing on railway station platforms, passenger lifts and the like.
Figure l of the accompanying drawings shows the machine from back with shutters closed. Fig. 2 the machine from back with shutters open. Fig. 3 vertical section. Fig. 4 shows the front view of machine. Fig. 5 shows button and cone in one piece.
Behind a glass or other transparently covered aperture A which is inserted on the face of the machine are shutters B which become opened by the simple pressure of a button C which projects from the face of the machine. The effect of pressing the button is to cause the shutters to open, thereby bringing into view any advertisement printed on card, glass or the like, or articles or objects may be disclosed if desired the same having previously been placed inside the machine behind the shutters. As soon as the pressure on the button is removed the shutters become closed by the agency of springs D attached to scissor shaped arms E which hold the shutters in position and control the Working of them.
The button and cone, see Fig. 5, are in one piece, the apex of the cone being directed toward the lower portion of the scissors, which are specially shaped so that an opening or space is left between them when the scissors are closed. lVhen the button is pressed the cone is forced through this opening or space and the scissors are forced apart, carrying with them the shutters to which they are attached by screws F. The advertisement, article or object is then visible. When pressure on the button C, and thereby the cone, is released, the cone recedes from the opening and the springs D perform their work of closing the shutters and causing the advertisement, article or object to disappear from sight until the operation of exerting pressure on the button is again performed.

In order that the cone, being in one piece with the button also called C, may be guided and work evenly in and out of the opening a pin G is inserted into the apex of the cone C the other end of such pin being passed through a small hole in a staple H; by this means when the button C is pressed the cone to which it is attached must move in the proper direction and exert a more even pressure on each arm of the scissors than would otherwise be the case. The shutters B are also regulated and kept in their proper position behind the aperture by grooves J. Indicating letter K shows slots cut into the upper portion of the scissors; in these slots the pins F attached to the shutters move backward and forward and prevent the shutters from overlapping each other, as the springs can only close the shutters to the meeting place of these two pins, this being as far as the shutters are required to close in order to effectually cover the advertisement, article or object. These advertisements may consist of articles or objects to be disclosed as well as of printed matter.
Having now fully described the nature of my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with the transparently covered aperture adapted to contain an advertisement or display, the longitudinally sliding shutters adapted to cover and reveal said aperture, the spring actuated lever arms pivoted upon said shutters, and means for opening and closing said lever arms to move said shutters to cover or reveal said aperture, said means comprising a conical headed button mounted in an opening between the lower ends of said lever arms, the shank of said button being adapted to receive the actuating pressure and the conical head serving to enter the aperture between the said lever arms and force the same apart.
2. A device for displaying advertisements or displays, comprising a transparently covered aperture, a pair of shutters slidable in grooves or tracks to cover said aperture, a pair of scissor-shaped lever arms having slotted upper ends pivoted to said shutters and lower ends pivoted upon the device, a slotted rack upon said device, a conical headed actuating button mounted in said slotted rack and adapted to enter the openmg between the lower ends of said lever arms and force same apart, and means for closing said shutters upon the discontinuation of the actuating pressure upon the button.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a transparently covered aperture, a pair of shutters slidable in grooves or tracks to cover said aperture, a pair of scissor-shaped lever arms having slotted upper ends pivoted to said shutters and lower ends pivoted upon the device, a slotted rack upon said device, a conical headed actuating button mounted in said slot-ted rack and adapted to enter the opening between the lower ends of said lever arms and force same apart, and means for closing said shutters upon the discontinuation of the actuating pressure upon the button, said means consisting of a triangular series of springs secured upon the inner faces of the lever arms.
4. A machine for displaying advertisements or the like, consisting of the transparently covered display opening, the longitudinally sliding shutters mounted in grooves in said machine, and adapted to cover and reveal said aperture, the scissorshaped actuating levers pivoted at their lower ends to the machine and having their upper slotted ends secured to said shutters, the slotted rack secured upon said machine the actuating button mounted in said slotted rack secured to said machine and having a conical head adapted to enter an opening formed between the lower ends of said lever arms to force same apart, and means for closing said lever arms when the pressure upon'said button is discontinued.
