To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS E. DRoHAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Schenectady, in the Y county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pillow, of which the following is a full, clear, and cX- act description. 4

My invention relates to a new and improved form of pillow especially adapted to provide an open air space between the cushions head and the support on which the pillow rests.

The object of my invention is,V to provide a new and improved form of pillow which may be used either with or without a cushion, the invention comprehending a structure whereby open space is provided beneath the persons head, this space being adapted to contain a hot or cold water bottle, or a bag of cracked ice if so desired.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the class described, having means whereby the air space,beneath the persons head may be varied.

A still further object is to provide a device of the class described which will consist of few parts and will be effective in operation and may be produced at a low cost.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting` part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pillow with the cushion thereon; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the pillow; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view adjacent one end thereof; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view showing the details whereby the open space may be varied.

The pillow preferably comprises the end members 1 2, which may be of any suitable form of construction, but preferably cylindrical, each of these end members being spaced apart by suitable means to be pres ently described, there being a continuous band 3 passing around the end members and acting as a support for a cushion 4.

The material of the end members 1 2 may be anything suited for the purpose, while the endless band 3 is preferably of some fabric, while the cushion 4 may be of such material as such articles are generally made.

Each of the end members 1 2 is provided with a plurality of openings 5 6, through which adjustable rods 7 9 are adapted to extend; one end of each of the rods bears against the inside of each of the end members 1 2, the other end of each rod being screw threaded as at 10-11, being thereby adapted to engage with a suitable thumb nut 12 13. Secured to the inside of each of the end members 1 2 and eX` tending through the openings 5 is a cylindrical or tubular member 8 14 which is secured to the end member at one end by any means, such as a screw 15; the threaded end of each of the rods 7 9 is adapted to ext-end into these tubular members 14, the thumb nuts 12 13 engaging against the outer end of the tubular members whereby movement of the nuts along the threaded portion of the rods will cause the end members to approach each other or be moved apart, thereby increasing the tension on the continuous band 3, with the consequent variation in the width of the air space included between the top and bottom portions of this continuous band.

The cushion 4 which may be used with the pillow if desired, is conveniently secured in position thereon by any means, such as a cord or ribbon 17 extending through the end members and tied at its ends.

My pillow is especially adapted for use in hospitals for fever patients and others where it is advisable to keep the head cool; in providing the open air space beneath the persons head, it is an easy matter to maintain a hot or cold water bottle or a cracked ice bag under the head, thereby securing the benefits from the use of such articles, and in a convenient and cleanly manner. The end members 1 2 may be easily separated from the continuous band 8, thereby providing for removal of the band and substitution of another one when so desired.

Of course, it is obvious that the size of the parts may be varied to meet dierent conditions, and the shape may be such as occasion requires, such changes being comprehended within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A device of the class described, comprising end members, a plurality of rods eX- tending between the members, each rod having a threaded end, a nut on each threaded end, a tubular member in engagement with each threaded end, with each nut and with each end member, whereby movement of the nut along the threaded end will move the end members relatively to each other, together with a continuous band passing around the said end members.

2. A device of the class described, comprising end members, a plurality ot' rods extending between the members, each rod having a threaded end, a nut on each threaded end, a tubular member in engagement with each threaded end, with each nut and with each end member, whereby movement of the nut along the threaded end will move the end members relatively to each other, together with a connecting band extending aro-und and inclosing the end members.

3. A device of the class described comprising cylindrical end members, a tubular member carried by each end member, a plurality of rods extending between the members, one end of each rod being threaded and having a thumb nut thereon, the said threaded end entering one of the said tubular members whereby movement of the nut will move the end members relatively to each other, there being a continuous band passing around the said end members.
