To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS L. MONA- GHAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Swimming Mitt or Glove, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription.
The invention relates to swimming appliances and its object is to provide a new and improved swimming mitt or glove for convenient attachment to the hand of a person with a view to keep the fingers in the proper position thus greatly aiding a person in learning to swim. In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a mitt body of a length and width to accommodate the four fingers of a persons hand, with a view to hold the said fingers in extended position and one alon side the other, a retaining band extending longitudinally from the rear upper end of the mitt body, and awrist band on the rearend of the said retaining band and adapted to encircle the wrist of the person using the mitt, the ends of the wrist band being provided with fastening means for holding the wrist band in closed position around the wrist of the user.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure l is a plan view of the swimming mitt or glove; and Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the same.
It is well known that beginners keep the fingers of the hands spread apart when learning to swim and consequently the hand does not form a paddle as it should be in propelling the person forward in the water during the swimming stroke, and in order to keep the fingers in stretched position and one alongside the other is the object of the mitt presently to be described in detail, so that a proper paddle is formed for propelling the person forward.
The body A of the swimming mitt is made of rubber or other suitable material not liable to be affected by being immersed in water, and the said body A is made of a length and width to accommodate the four fingers of the hand of a person, as plainly indicated in the drawing, it being understood that the rear end of the mitt terminates in a line transverse to the junction of the forefinger with the thumb so that the thumb is outside of the body A. A retaining band B is secured to the upper rear end of the body A and extends rearwardly over the back of the hand to the wrist, and on the rear end of the said retaining band B is secured a wrist band C adapted to encircle the wrist. The ends of the wrist band C are adapted to be fastened together at the under side of the wrist by the use of suitable fastening means such for instance as a button D and buttonhole D, or spring buttons and sockets of the usual construction.
By the arrangement described the body A can be readily placed in position on the users hand at the time the wrist band C is open, and after the body A has been drawn in position on the hand so as to inclose the four fingers then the band B is drawn rearward and the wrist band C is caused to encircle the wrist and is closed by the fastening device D, D, so as to securely hold the mitt or glove in position on the users hand.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A mitt having a body of a length and Width for accommodating the four fingers of a persons hand to hold the said fingers in extended position and one alongside the other, a retaining band extending longitudinally from the rear upper end of the mitt body, and a wrist band on the rear end of the said retaining band and adapted to encircle the wrist of the person using the mitt, the ends of the wrist band being provided with fastening means for holding the wrist band in closed position around the wrist of the user.
