SAFETY-RAZOR.
Application filed July 8. 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES JEREMIAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to safety razors, and consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth and pointed out particularly in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide a safety razor of comparatively simple and inexpensive construction, in which the arrangement is such as to enable a very thin blade to be quickly and accurately placed in position and securely held for shaving; provision being made for alining the edge of the blade with the guard; for readily assembling and disassembling the parts, and for presenting a smooth exterior surface when the parts are operatively associated.
The above object is attained by the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a safety razor, showing an embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the guard plate and handle attached thereto. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in section through the head of the razor, showing the blade secured therein. Fig. 1 is a similar view showing the pivoted clamping lever swung to a position to release the blade. Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the head of the razor showing the parts disassembled. Fig. U is a perspective view of the pivoted clamping lever. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the holder in which the blade and guard plate are secured by means of said lever.

vided with a thread The stem 1 is bent to such an extent as to cause the free end thereof to project at an angle of about 10 to the face of said plate. Adapted to screw onto the threaded portion 5 of the stem 4 is a handle 6, the curve of the stem 4 causing the bladesupporting plate 1 to stand at the proper angle with respect to the face for shaving when the razor is held by the handle.
The blade holder or retainer comprises a plate 7 having at its ends the ear pieces 8 bent at right angles to the plane of said plate, ,each ear being provided with an aperture 9. Pivoted in said aperture are the trunnions 10 on th ends of the cross arm 11 of the locking lever 12, the central portion of said lever being cut away in the form of a V, as shown at 13 for the purpose of straddling the stem 4 at its point of attachment with the plate 1. By this arrangement the locking lever becomes pivotally held between the ears 8 of the blade retainer. Tl rear edge of the blade retainer is provided with a rectangular flange 11. The blade 15 comprises a thin piece of flat steel of the proper length and width provided with a cutting edge 16.
To assemble the parts, the blade and the blade-supporting plate 1 are placed within the blade retainer, their rear edges resting against the flange 14 and the ends of the blade and supporting plate lying between the ears 8, in which position said parts are clamped in the blade retainer by swinging the free end of the locking lever into engagement with the stem or handle, as shown in Fig. 3. It will be noted that the cross arm 11 of the locking lever is of greater width than thickness. Therefore, hen the free end of said lever is swung downwardly into engagement with the handle, the inner edge of the cross arm will be caused to forcibly engage the plate 1 and crowd the blade 15 lying thereon tightly into contactwith the inner face of the plate 7 of the blade retainer, thereby firmly locking said parts together and rendering the razor operative for shaving. The width of the blade 15 is such that when the rear edge is in contactwith the liange 14 of the blade retainer, the edge of the blade will lie upon the guard teeth the proper thereof. To remove the blade, lever is swung outwardly or upwardly the looking to the distance from thcendsposition shown in Fig. 4, when the bladesupporting plate and guard and the blade cause said lever to lie closely against the stem and handle, when the parts are in operative position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
It will be noted that the outer face of the blade retainer is perfectly smooth and that when the blade is clamped therein, a smooth exterior surface is presented beyond which no projecting parts extend, obviating the liability of scratchin the face in the oper ation of shaving an enabling the razor to be placed against the face at any angle desired.
The parts of the razor'may be easily detached or separated by releasing the lever 2 so as to enable them to be readily cleaned after shaving. It will be noted that when the lever is raised, as shown in Fig. 2, the distance between the inner edge of the cross arm 11 thereof and the inner face of the plate of the blade retainer is so increased as to enable the guard plate and the blade to be readily inserted into and removed from said retainer. It will further be noted that the extreme simplicity of all of the parts, excepting the stem and handle, enables them to be readil formed of stampings.
Having t us fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: i

In a safety razor, the combination of a blade su porting plate, a handle rigid with the bla e supporting plate, a removable blade retaining plate adapted to be applied to the supporting plate, a blade adapted to be fitted between the blade retaining plate and blade su porting plate, and a locking lever carried the blade retaining plate for engagement with the blade supporting plate to clamp the blade between the two said pl: ice.

In a safety razor, the combination of a blade supporting plate, a stem projecting therefrom, a blade retaining plate adapted to be applied to the blade supporting plate and provided at opposite ends thereof with ears, and a locking lever pivoted upon the ears and constructed to enga e the blade supporting plate to hold the lade retainin plate in position and grip the blade, the be ore mentioned stem constituting a stop for the locking lever to limit the movement thereof in one direction.
4. In a safety razor, the'combination of a blade supporting plate, a blade retaining plate provided at opposite ends thereof with ears and at one side thereof with a flange, a blade adapted to be inserted between the two said plates so as to be properly positioned by the ears and flange, and a locking lever pivoted upon the ears and adapted to engage ,the blade supporting plate to hold the blade retaining plate in position and grip the blade.
5. In a safety razor, the combination of a blade sup orting plate, a removable blade retaining pi ate adapted to be applied to the blade supporting plate, a blade adapted to be clamped between the two plates, and a locking lever carried by the blade retaining plate and removable therewith, the said locking lever being adapted to engage the back of the blade supporting plate to hold the blade retaining plate 1n position and cause the two plates to grip the blade.
