WITNESSES: A [NVEN 7012.
M MKOWA'UZ A TTORNE 1 .5
UNITED STATES once.
MARTIN MAKOWAGZ, 0F PITTEiBURG-H, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING UMBRELLA Be it known that I, MARTIN MAKOWACZ, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at N. S. Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to folding um brellas, and the objects of my invention are,
first, to provide an umbrella that can be reduced in its longitudinal dimensions to form a comparatively small, parcel that can be carried in the pocket orin a satchel; second,
to provide an umbrella having a sectional stick and foldable ribs that can be easily and quickly manipulated to open or close the umbrella, and third, to )vide the ribs of the umbrella with novel means, in a man ner as will be hereinafter set forth for maintaining the rib section in an extend d position. 1
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the draw: ing, wherein a Figure 1 is .an elevation of an umbrella stick and rib, showing the rib in a raised position and the stick partly broken away and partly in section, Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of the umbrella showing I we rib folded, Fig. 3 is ane'nlarged plan of a portion of a rib, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same. v
The umbrella stick comprises a handle section 1, a tip section 2 and a tip 3, the upper ends of the sections 1 and 2- having sockets t with the walls thereof screw threaded to receive the exteriorly screw threaded depending stems 5 carried by the lower ends of the section 2 and the tip ,3. The lower end of the section 1 is screw threaded and is adapted to screw into a socket 6 provided therefor in the upper end of a. handle 7.
Mounted upon the upper end of the section 2 is a notch b and connected to said notch in-the ordinary and well-known manner is an inner rib section 9. Pivotally connected by a pin 10 to the outer end of-the section 9 is a link "11 and this link is pivot.
ally connected by a pin 12 to the inner end of ar outer rib section 13 One side of the Specification of Letters Patent.

ate the ends thereof, whereby the'ends of.
said rod can extend along one side of each of the sections 9 and 13. The ends of the rod 15 are adapted to engage under resilient straps or clips16 soldered or otherwise connected to the sections 9 and 13 adjacent to the link 11. The ends of the rod'15 are frictionally held by the clips 16 and said rod cooperates'with the clips-in maintaining the sect-ions 9 and 13'inlongitudinal alinement. hen the sections of the ribs are folded, an end of the rod 15 passes out of the clip 16 as the ribs 9 and 13 swing. on pivots 10 and 12 carried by the link 11.
Slidably mounted upon the stick is a runner l7 and pivotally connected to the run ner in the ordinary and well known manner, as at 18 is a stretcher '19 having the outer end thereof pivotally connected by a pin 20 to an apertured lug 21, carried adjacent to the outer end of the rib section 9. The runner 17 is adapted to be held in a "raised orv lowered position by ordinary catches 22.
The rib sections of the umbrella are adapted to support-"a cover 23, which is connected to the rib sections in a manner that will not interfere with the folding of the sections, as shown in Fig. 2.
What I claim is p In a folding umbrella, the combination with a sectional stick having a notch, a runner and a stretcher, of an inner rib section pivotally connected to said notch and to the outer-end of said stretcher, an outer rib section, a link having the ends thereof pivot ally connected to the lower end of said inner rib section and the upper endv of said outer rib section, a holder carried by one side of said link, .a rod carried by said holder and adapted to have the ends thereof extend along one side of each rib section,
and a resilient clip carried by each rib section adjacent to said link and adapted to a receive the end of said rod, substantially as, and for the purposes herein described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two'witnesses.
