CHARLES H. FOSTER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
EXPANSION-TANK SUPPORTI Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9, 1912.
Application filed August 26, 1911. Serial No. 646,246.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES H. Fos'ran, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Expansion-Tank Supports, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention has relation to improvements in expansion-tank supports; and it consists in the novel details of construction more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a hot water" heating system showing an expansion tank with my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a side view of the upper extension bracket with parts broken; Fig. 3 is a bottom plan of said extension bracket; Fig. 4 is an end view thereof; Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the bottom angle-piece or bracket on which the tank rests; Fig. 6 is a side view of said anglepiece; and Fig. 7 is a top plan view.
In connection with hot water circulating heating systems, the several radiators of the system must be connected to a common expansion tank serving as a relief for the steam of the condensation water, such tank being usually placed in the garret of the house, the relief pipe from the tank being passed through the roof and discharging into the atmosphere. The object ofmy invention is to provide a simple support for such tank. In detail the invention may be described as follows:
Referring to the drawings, R, represents a hot water radiator, P, the feed pipe I the outlet or return pipe, and P a relief pipe discharging through the bottom of the expansion tank T. The bottom Z) of the tank is raised above the lower edge of the peripheral wall of the tank whereby a depending flange a is formed as shown. From the top of the tank leads a vent pipe V which runs through the roof S of the house or dwelling. The tank as above stated is generally placed in the garret and secured to a studding D of the wall.
The bottom member of my new support comprises an angle-piece 1 the vertical leg of which is screwed to the studding. In the present form the horizontal leg of said angle-piece is in the shape of two upwardly inclined arms 2, 2 terminating in substantially vertical fingers 3, 3, with inner rounded faces (Z whereby the flange a may be readily guided into position as the tank is being deposited on the arms 2, 2 for a rest ing place or support. The upper member of my new support comprises an extension bracket composed of a relatively stationary member 1 screwed to the studding, and an adjustable or sliding member 5 terminating at its outer free end in an eye or loop 6 through which the pipe V may pass. Once the parts 4, 5, are adjusted the same are clamped together by a screw 7 carried by the stationary member and traversing a slot 8 in the movable member. The member 4; may be regarded as the female section of the bracket receiving it does the sliding or male section 5 and is made hollow so as to house the screws m n (by which the lower and upper supports are respectively secured to the studding) for purposes of shipping. By depositing the screws on n in the chamber of the section 4 and sliding the section 5 up to the eye 6 so as to close the chamber and then clamping the parts together, the upper bracket and the screws m n may be conveniently shipped as a single piece. A rib 8 spans the slot .9 near its inner end to make certain that the stem of neither screw m n will work through and project from the slot while the goods are in transit. The inner terminal wall w of the section 4 forms a locking shoulder for the nut t carried by the binding screw 7 so that the screw may be turned while the nut is held stationary, the nut too acting as a washer to hold the screw in position on the member 4. The opposite end wall is of course provided with an opening for the passage of the screw n. The extension bracket 4, 5 engaging as it does, the pipe V close to the top of the tank secures the latter against a downward oscillation about the bracket arms 2, and the latter in conjunction with their fingers 3, 3 serve to afford a rest for the tank at the bottom, the fingers preventing any horizontal slipping of the tank. It follows therefore that a very simple anchor 01' fastener for the tank is the result. Obviously the support is not limited in its application to expansion tanks.
Having described my invention What I claim is:
1. A top supporting member for a tank having a vent pipe, comprising an extension bracket having a chambered stationary member and a slotted sliding extension member terminating in an eye, the chamber of the stationary member being adapted to be closed by a collapse of the members and adapted to house the screw by which the stationary member may be secured in position, and a screw on the stationary member traversing the slot of the sliding member.
2. A top supporting member for a tank having a vent pipe, comprising an extension bracket having a chambered stationary member and a sliding extension member terminating in an eye, the chamber of the stationary member being adapted to house the securing screws for the bracket, while being 5 shipped, and be protected by the sliding member upon collapse of the members, the sliding member being provided with an elongated slot spanned by a rib near its inner end, and a clamping screw on the stationary member traversing the major length of the slot on one side of the rib.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
