WILLIAM HERBERT CUSHMAN, F TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGOR T THE E. a. rando COMPANY, ISLAND.
or TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION. 0F RHODE:
Nasr or DRINKING-CUPS.
Specification of Letters Patent. i Patented Mar, 26. j 91 9 Application filed October 17, 1910. Serial No. 587,579.
To all whom .it may concm: Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. CUSH- .MAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of'Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State ofMassachusetts, have invented certain new and Nestsof Drinking-Cups, of which the fol'- lowing is a specification'.
This invention has reference to a nest of drinking cups, lits object being to provide aplurality of uniform cups adapted to set closely -one .within the other, and to provide simple, inexpensive and yet eifective means for covering the top ofthe cups'and at the same time coupling and binding the whole together but without causing them to frictionally bind so as to render separation diilicult. Y
(With these and other objects in view, the 2U invention consists of lcertain novel'v features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim. l In the accompanying drawings Figure 1-' is an external view of the nest of cups, covered and secured together by the coupling. Fig. 2# shows a central sectional view Athrough the coupling or retaining -members and i also showing aportion of' the cups broken away toshow how they nestto-` gether. Fig. 3*- is a detail of one of the cups showing the shell'partly broken away. Fig. 4,-- is a central section of thetop cap portion of the coupling. Fig.' 5f is a central section of the ring portion of the coupling. l l -Referring'to the drawings 1 designates the, body of the cup made" in frusto-conieal shape, larger `at the top than a'tthe bottom. The bottom portion 2 concaved as at 3 `to obtain a bearing around `its outer edge when resting upon its base. -The cups are substantially-uniform .in size and shape and the upper edge of each cup is provided around its -outside with a Areinforcing and stifening'ring 4. The'vertic'al width of this ring is suc'h that its lower edge formsl a shoulder 6 at a point far enough below the upper edge or top of the cup to rest against the upperedge of thev next adjacent cup when all are assembled together, so as to forni a stop to prevent the useful Improvements in@ of the cup is slightly'4 lower edge of this band also provides a A shoulder on be engaged the lowermost cup which may by the flange 9 of the said coupling ring 7 when drawing and retaining the nest--of-cups together, so that the lowermost shoulder of the'set coacts with the ring 7 and cap 8 to hold the cups assembled without the use of any other inclosure. This coupling retaining ring or band-7 .may be .1 constructed in .any desiredmanner, but is shown as, and preferably is, struck or stamped up out of thin sheet metal preferably aluminum. with. a screw thread- 10 formed therein from its upper edge v.partway is preferably enough to cover more than` half 'of the superimposed edges of the nest.- ing cups. .A narrow strip of. knurling or roughening 11 is formed around the lower portion of the ring by .which it may be grasped by the hand in assembling and releasing the parts. The lower edgel of this ring is bent inward forming a flange 9 for engagingthe shoulder 6 under the edge of the lowermost cup. l Y
The ,coupling cap 8, like the ring, is preferably struck up out of thin sheet material, preferably aluminum, has an oval top 12, is knurled or roughened at 13 around its upper edge and is also screwv threaded at 14 and 85 adapted to engage and. it over that on the coupling ring `whereby the two members form a complete coupling which is adapted to cover, draw together by means I of the screw thread, and lock the nest of 4cups all 90 vinto a single dust-tight package. l It will be observed by this construction that all of -the cupsare set Aone .withinthe other, the lower edge of the'flange 4 of one cup meeting the upper edgeof the flange of the next cupV below, and that in this man-- ner a half-dozen,'more. or less, cups may be neatly packed together. to take up but a very small space and when made of 'thin alumii num weighs but -a trifle .Y
One 'of' the features of the invention is that the coupling comprising the cap and vretaining ring cover `the opening in the upper 'cup and bind the vwhole together by engaging only vthe edges thereof, thereby causing the 'exterior of the lower'cup to form i a'casing for protecting those within..
I claim:
cups from being jammed ,and frictionally stuck together, after being bound tightly by 5 the coupling presently described. The
A nest f drinking cups comprising a plurality of r tapering metal cups of uniform of its width, and the width of the ring 70 close the tops of all of said cups and bind 10 the Whole nestinto one unitary element.
In testimony whereof I afHX my signature in' presence ofv two Witnesses.
