FLAME-GAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VON WV. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Dekalb and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flame-Gages, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a device, particularly adaptable for incubator lamps, for gaging the height of lamp flames.
To accomplish the desired result, use is made of a base connected to the burner of a lamp or the like, a rod extended upwardly from the base and a series of connected parallel plates secured to the upper end of the said rod and relatively spaced apart, the said plates being disposed at a height substantially equal to the height of the flame from the burner so that by operating the lamp mechanism for controlling the height of the wick, the height of the flame can be correctly gaged.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device looking at the same from the rear. Fig. 2 is a front elevation showing my device ap plied. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken vertically through the gage.
Referring more particularly to the views I provide a base 10 consisting of outwardly extending flanges 11, 12, the flange 11 being provided at its outer end with a hook 13 adapted to be received in an aperture 14 in the flange 12 so that the flanges can be connected at their outer ends. Depending from the base 10 at the inner section of the inner ends of the flanges 11 and 12 is a rod 15 and extending upwardly from the flanges 11 and 12 is a rod 16, the upper end of the rod 16 having secured thereto a series of superposed spaced plates 17, the said plates being relatively parallel and rigidly held together.
In the application of my device to the burner 18 of a lamp, the flanges 11 and 12 are passed around the burner and connected at their ends, the lower rod 15 being disposed to lie against the burner and position my device rigidly thereon. The plates '17 secured to the ends of the upper rod 16 will be in horizontal alinement with the flame 19 and by operating the usual screw 20 of the burner 18 and gazing through the space between the plates 17, the height of the flame relatively to the burner can be easily and quickly adjusted.
In the use of incubator lamps it is particularly necessary to retain a constant temperature in the incubator and thus it will be seen that with my device applied to an incubator burner it is only necessary to adjust the flame to the height of one of the plates 17 and by simply gazing through the spaces between the plates 17 at certain intervals, the operator can readily determine whether the height of the flame is correct and of suflicient intensity to properly heat the incubator, atmospheric conditions being taken into consideration in regulating the flame.
The base of my device can be preferably stamped out of an integral piece of material and the plates 17 can be rigidly held together in any convenient manner,it being understood that I do not limit myself to the construction shown in the drawings, the scope of the invention being defined in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, is
1. A device of the class described comprising a base, flanges extended therefrom and c'onnectible at their outer ends, a rod integrally formed on the base and depending therefrom, a second rod on the base and extending upwardly therefrom and a se ries of superimposed relatively spaced plates secured to the upper end of the said rod, the said plates being relatively rigid.
2. A device of the class described comprisinga base for connection with a lamp, a rod extended upwardly from the said base and a series of superimposed plates, the ends of adjacent plates being connected and the lowermost plate being secured to the said rod.
3. A device of the class described comprising a base for connection with a lamp, a rod extended upwardly from the base, aseries of superimposed plates, means for connecting the ends of adjacent plates, the lowermost plate being secured to the said rod.
4. A device of the class described comprising a base, a rod integrally formed on the base and depending therefrom, a second rod extending upwardly from the said base, 'a series of superimposed plates, the lowermost plate being mounted on the second superimposed connected plates, the lowerinentioned rod and means for connecting the most plate being mounted on the said rod. 10
