Description

J. BELLERJEAU.
Lamp Chimney.
Patented 'June 4; 1867;
R5. Pnum-Laho npher, Washington. D. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT CFFIOE.
JOHN BELLERJEAU, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN LAMP-CHIMNEYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 65,467, dated J une 4, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BELLERJEAU, of the city of Philadelphia, in the cormty of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Coal-Oil-Lamp Chimney; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my invention, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, partly in section.
This invention relates to a new chimney which is meant to be used especially for lanterns, but which may also be used on any other coal-oil burner.
The invention consists in so arranging a metal tube, and securing it to the burner by means of narrow metal strips, that a glass chimney may be placed over and around the narrow strips, so that the light will shine through the glass, while its destructive effects will be exerted on the metal and not on the glass.
A is a common lamp-burner, to which the tubular lower attachment B of an annular plate, (J, is secured in the same manner in which ordinaryglass chimneys are usually secured to burners. Upon the plate 0 are secured two or more upright sheetmetal or wire rods, D, by which a conical metal tube, E, is supported.
The glass chimney F is slipped over the metal eoneE and rods D, as shown in the drawings, and rests upon the plate 0. It should be so arranged that the external diameter of the lower end of the metal chimney E should coincide as nearly as possible, or be at least very little smaller than the internal diameter of the upper end of the glass chimney F. Thus the draft will not be impaired by too large a space being left between the metal and glass chimneys.
The glass chimney can, furthermore, be very easily removed, cleaned, and replaced, and cannot possibly drop or fall off the supports.
The metal chimney is so placed that the slot in the burner will be in line between the uprights D, whereby the glass chimney is protected from being overheated, as the edges of the fiat flame will throw their heat against these uprights.
The chimney F may also be made of mica or any other transparent substance. It may also be made of two parts, which may be provided with pins that slide in grooves in the uprights D.
It is very easy to light a lamp which is provided with this chimney, as it is only necessary to raise the chimney F a little and to apply the light to the wicl Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The metal chimney E, when supported by upright bars D and secured to an annular plate, 0, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. A lampchimney consisting of the lower glass or transparent chimney F and an upper metal chimney, E, which are so arranged that the same do not come in direct contact with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The glass chimney F, in combination with the metal strips or bars D, arranged inside of the glass chimney, substantially as herein described, for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me.
