Description

F. M'Y E RS.
Sad-lronHeaters.
Patented Sep.1 7,1 872.
Inventor:
UNITED STATES FREDERICK MYERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAD-IRON HEATERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,406, dated September 17, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK MYERS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Toilet Smoothin g-Iron, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a smoothing-iron having a vertical standard extending upward at the point of the iron on the upper face, the said'standard supporting a handle provided with an opening to admit of an ordinary gas burner being inserted therein, so as to hold the iron thereon with the face upward, allowing the flame to strike within the cavity in the upper face, thereby making it very convenient at all times to heat the iron for use.
Referring to the drawing, A is a plate, constructed the same as an ordinary sad-iron. G is a vertical standard, extending upward from the front end of the iron on the upper face. F is the handle, constructed of wood or any suitable material, attached to the upper end of the standard 0 by means of the screw E, to the lug D, as shown, or in any way so as to hold the handle firm to the said standard. H is a vertical opening in the handle, provided with a spring, K, where it is secured in any proper manner, the said spring being for the purpose of holding the iron firm when the gas-burner is too small for the opening. B is a cavity in the upper face of the iron to partly receive the flame, and also to retain any soot that may occur, and prevent the same from soiling the operators hands while using.
It will be seen that my plan of construction is desirable, owing to the facility by which the iron is attached and supported by the gasburner, the arranging of the handle dispensing with all complicated mechanisms.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent--- The combination, with the sad-iron plate A and vertical standard 0, of a handle provided with the openin g H and spring K, or its equivalent, all constructed and arranged so as to admit of the iron being supported to a gasburner while heating by means of a handle, substantially as shown.
FREDERICK MYERS.
