ATTACHMENT TO PIANO-CASES.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, JosrAn IVESTBROOK HURST, gentleman, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at No. 2l Friarstile road, Richmond, in the county of Surrey, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments t0 Piano-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

One object of my invention is to provide a compact, convenient and ornamental cabinet attachment for pianos or similar instruments particularly designed for holding sheet music or musical records in the shape of rolls. This object and other advantageous ends I attain as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which 'Figure 1 is a partial front elevation of a piano illustrating my invention as applied thereto; Fig. 2, is a horizontal section on the line 2-2, Fig. l; Fig. 3, is a vertical section on the line 3 3, Fig. 2; Figs. l and 5 are fragmentary vertical sections of modiiications of my invention; Fig. 6, is a partial front elevation illustrating a form of my invention which combines the features of those forms shown in Figs. 3 and 5; Fig. 7 is a horizontal section on the line 7-7, Fig. 6, Fig. 8, is a fragmentary vertical section on the line 8 8, Fig. 7 and Fig. 9, is a perspective view of one form of my invention showing the cabinet in its open position.

Referring to Figs. l to 3 of the above drawings, a represents a piano or similar instrument and Z2 is the music cabinet or case constructed according to my invention. In this, the simplest form of the invent-ion, the cabinet is open at one side which is preferably closed by the end of the piano and is mounted upon and fastened to a base board which projects for a considerable distance -beyond the inner side of said cabinet and slides under the piano; the base board thereby bearing against the bottom of the piano and holding the cabinet in any given position. Casters Z97 are provided whereby the base board and the cabinet are supported and a handle Z 14 is mounted on the front of the cabinet as shown in Figs l and 2. If desired, the base board ZJ) may be made of heavy material such as metal so as to balance the cabinet and its contents, thereby insuring its stability, and 4permitting it to be easily run into and out of its Specification of Letters Patent.

In the upper part of the cabinet I preferably mount a number of clips or holders b4 particularly designed for the reception of music record rolls indicated at o in the above drawings, while in the lower portion of the cabinet I place a number of vertical partitions b5 extending from one side to the other thereof to provide compartments for sheet music indicated at c.

In the modified form of my invention shown in Fig. 4L, the top and bottom boards of the cabinet at their inner edges are provided with vertically offset studs ZJS while the end of the piano a is provided with corresponding transverse guide grooves at in which said studs are designed to slide; the arrangement being such that the cabinet b may be slid into and out of position and turned' on said studs as hinges in the general manner indicated in Fig. 7

In the case shown in Fig. 5, the lid a5 of the piano is prolonged beyond the end of the instrument and has a groove L4 and there is a strip or step also having a groove a3. This step is mounted at the bottom of the piano and the cabinet is provided with vertical studs Z 8 designed to operate in this groove as before noted; it being possible to slide the cabinet into or out of position and turn it upon its studs as pivots.

The features shown in the preceding figures are combined in that form of my invention shown in Figs. 6 to 9 inclusive, for in this instance the base board b1 is separate from the cabinet and slides in dovetail guide strips Z213 upon the piano a, though these may be omitted as in Figs. l to 3. The outer end of the base board is provided with a vertical wall Z910 as well as a top Z211 and a side or back Z911, thus constituting a case into and out of which the cabinet proper, indicated at Z), is adapted to slide. The top 512 and base board b9 in this case are provided with grooves a3 while the top and bottom of the cabinet are furnished with studs or pins 68 designed to slide in said grooves, so that, as previously described, the cabinet may be drawn forward until said studs are at the extremities of the grooves and thereafter turned as upon hinges, into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7.

I claim l. The combination of a musical instrument case; a base board slidable under the same; front, side and top members carried by the base board; With a cabinet also carried by the base board in position to coperate With said front, side and top members to form a closed container; said cabinet being free to move bodily relatively to the instrument case as Well as to turn on a vertical aXis.

2. The combination of a musical instrument having a case provided With members projecting respectively at the upper and lovver portions of one of its ends; one of the members being extended under the said case so as to be reinforced thereby and there being grooves in both of said members; with a music cabinet having studs forming pivots mounted to slide loosely in said grooves, as Well as to turn therein.

3. The combination of a musical instrument case; a base board slidably mounted under the same and having a groove; a top piece also having a groove; and a cabinet provided with trunnions forming vertical pivots operative in said grooves and free both to turn and to slide longitudinally therein.

4. The combination of a musical instrument case; a base board slidable under said case; rollers on said base board; and a cabinet open on one face and mounted on said base board; With means movably connecting the cabinet to the base-board for guiding it from and into a position With its open face against one end of the case so as to be closed thereby.

5. The combination of a musical instrument case having supporting members projecting respectively from the upper and lower portions of one of its ends; with a cabinet having an open face; means movably connecting the cabinet to said members for guiding it from and into a position with said open face against one end of the instrument case so as to be closed thereby.

6. The combination of a musical instrument case; a base board slidably mounted under the same; a cabinet mounted on said base board and having an open face; With means movably connecting the cabinet to the base-board for guiding it from and into a position With said open face against the end of the case; and roll supporting clips mounted in said cabinet.
