HOLDER FOR MUSIC SHEETS, BOOKS, &.c.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAV A. BISLER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOLDER FOR MUSIC-SHEETS, BOOKS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,668, dated May 21, 1901.
Application filed December 4, 1900. Serial No. 38,636. (No model.)
To aZZ whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, GUSTAV A. BISLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of vPennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvemen t in Holders for Music-Sheets,Books, 85e., of which the following is' a specification.
My invention consists of a holder for a mnsic-sheet, book, &:c., having a ledge thereon. which may have a channel for holding or supporting a book or may have said channel occupied by a filling-piece, so as to present no obstacle to the turning of a sheet of music and the like while resting on said holder or support.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of a portion detached. Figs. 3 and 4. represent vertical sections thereof, showing the channel of the holder occupied and unoccupied.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a flat board, at or near the bottom of which is the ledge B, the same having the flange C ris. ing from the front thereof and forming the vlongitudinally-extending channel D.
E designates a strip or piece of wood or other suitable material which is adapted to be fitted in the channel D, and thus ll the same, leaving the top of said filling-piece flushed or approximately flushed with the top of the flange C. It will now be seen that when the illing isin position a sheet of music or other paper may be placed on the board and rested on the said4 filling-piece, whereby the flange C presents no obstacle to the easy and convenient turning of the sheet.
Should the sheetbe of thin material, liable to slip, the same may be placed between the back of the filling-piece and the board, and thus be clamped by the same.
When a book is to be supported, the fillingpiece is removed and the book may be rested on the Vledge in the unoccupied channel, in which case the backs will be controlled by the flange C, and thus prevented from closing.
` The holder may be placed on the ledge of a piano or organ or other proper portion of such instrument and providea large surface for a sheet of music or book without permitting the same to be displaced, which large surfaces do not generally exist in such instruments and which will cover curved surfaces existing in the lids of the instruments which provide no proper support or holder for the sheet or book.
In denominating the part A as a board I do not limit myself to wood, as any other suitable material may be employed in lieu thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a holder for the purpose described, a board, a forwardly-projecting ledge thereon, and a flange rising from the outer side of said ledge forming a longitudinally extending channel in the upper face of said ledge between said fiange and the front of said board, and a filling-piece removably occupying said channel and having its upper face iiush with the top of said ange.
2. A holder for a music-sheet, book, dac., consisting of a board, a ledge on the lower portion thereof, and a Ilange on the front side of said ledge forming a longitudinally-eX- tending channel, and a filling-piece for said channel removably occupying the same and having its upper face Hush with the top of said flange.
GUSTAV A. BISLER.
